Playwright Sky Gilbert takes a real-life literary hoax to expound on fact and fiction, truth, lies and gender identity in his latest play Will The Real J.T. LeRoy Please Stand Up?

Torture and suffering also get repeated mention in this overlong two-act play. Both acts could have been considerably reduced for the audience by a much trimmer script and a better focus on where it's going.

First the backstory: In 1999, an author masquerading as an HIV-positive transsexual named J.T. LeRoy wrote a couple of successful books that were highly praised by Hollywood stars such as Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon and Tatum O'Neal.
