MIAMI -- A South Florida woman posing as a doctor was arrested Thursday and charged in the death of a woman who died after authorities said her body was pumped with unknown toxic substances during a buttocks-enhancement surgery.
Shatarka Nuby, a 31-year-old mother, paid a woman known as "Dutchess" hundreds of dollars to come to her house and inject her buttocks, hips, thighs and breasts with an unknown substance. The Dutchess, whose real name is Oneal Morris, sometimes wore medical scrubs and a stethoscope. She allegedly sealed Nuby's injections with super glue and cotton balls, according to Broward County Sheriff's deputies.

The Miami Herald link shows only that a woman posing as a phony doctor has been arrested in the death of people she "treated". Other headlines splashed the words "Trans Woman Charged As Fake Doctor" or a combination of different things and the word "Trans" or "Transgender" was used as if there is some material, scientific fact that trans people are people to be feared and as if there is some evidence significantly linking trans individuals to criminal behavior.
This sort of focus on the placement of the Transgender marker in a headline is sick, disgusting, unethical, and prejudicial. I have done research and so far in my limited time doing research so I could write this piece for this forum, I have found NOTHING anywhere to even remotely suggest that trans individuals have any higher incidence of criminal behavior. The evidence actually points away from Trans individuals and to those who would victimize trans individuals out of ignorance and hate.
I researched the story on this woman, and cannot for the life of me figure out why her transgender status matters beyond her lawyers and local community organizations making sure she is treated properly while in police / state custody. Will her trans status hurt her in court? I doubt it, unless the jurors are not instructed properly by the court to disregard her gender dysphoria and gender transition. Will the judge even make this order to the jury? I would hope so, but I don't want to make assumptions one way or the other until we see what happens.
Keeping in focus with the use of trans markers in the headlines, proper use of the words "Trans" and "Transgender" need to be limited to those headlines where a news agency prints a story where the marker is relevant, such as...stories about trans rights, developments in trans health care and other trans health care stories, transgender support / trans ally organization stories, stories involving transgender issues in society, trans discrimination, trans community events, etc. I am sure we can all list the appropriate uses of the "trans" marker in headlines and news stories.
Has there been any local or national outrage about how the transgender marker for this woman was used? I have yet to see anything anywhere. It seems to me that the mass media thinks it is ok to errantly use the trans marker, but they sure seem a little bit more careful when it comes to how they use the gay, lesbian, bi, or queer terms / markers in their headlines.
Does the mass media not realize that some transgender individuals can be lesbian, gay, bi, queer, etc? Do they realize just how much danger they have put this defendant into by outing her in public without her consent? They may possibly argue that it's fair game because of her serious accusations she is facing, but again, where is the link to prove that they even need to consider using the trans marker in her story?
The focus needs to be on the crime, the facts surrounding her acts, advocating for the victims she created, and how the justice system is proceeding with her case. They don't need anything more than those items. Even transgender people facing criminal charges have rights!
