What falls under the classification of transgender? Is it very specific [the obvious] or does this term encompass any kind of gender variances? Maybe not, I'm just trying to understand more clearly.

Here it's generally used to encompass any type of gender variance - anyone whose internal gender identity is in any way out of congruence with  their biological sex at birth.

Can include MtF and FtM transsexuals, all sorts of non-binary genders such as genderfluid, bigender, agender, neutrois, or androgyne. There may als be intersex people who consider themselves transgendered.
