the game is great. except for diamonds. their rarity can go hang itself. That and the fact that most diamonds aren't actually buried that deep bothers me.

building all sorts of new things, or just mining for hours and hours.

I when I'm just mining I usually have a movie going in a different window. :)

I do that sometimes too, or I just go on itunes and listen to a nice long podcast :)

Use one of the mapping programs, like Minutor.  I use them on the logic that real miners use geological maps and knowledge of strata to know where to dig (though it would have been neat if the devs had mirrored a bit more how geology and geophysics actually work). Not sure what you mean by "buried that deep" -- diamonds tend to appear between bedrock and about 14 m above in any of the seeds I've used, and that seems to be hard coded

I hate wasting time too much, so unless I'm actually self-flagellating, I tend to rely on the wiki quite a bit.

yeah I think it's hardcoded for something like 10-17 above the bedrock base.

I just meant with real world diamonds most that can actually be mined are forced toward the surface by geological activity that actually create them.

"The Argyle Diamond Mine is the world's largest diamond mining operation by volume, although not necessarily by value. Located in Australia, this mine covers 110 acres, and reaches down underground about 1,900 feet (not even 1 Km!) at its deepest part."

and considering mining that's pretty shallow for that being the absolute deepest point, while with gold I think the record for depth is about 4.5 kilometers. 1Km being 3280.84 feet.

So true. Real miners also can't enchant their pickaxes.  ;)

I used to use steeply slanted mineshafts and staircases, but over time I've gotten much more efficient with ladders and cutting out vertical shafts relatively safely. One of the minor annoyances I've had, though, is how ongoing changes to the code tend to affect maps that one has worked on over a long time period. I have a very developed farm and village system in one map, but the latest Redstone revisions are going to make it very unattractive to play unless I can find some way to rebuild the nether to include quartz deposits.

My map, in an older version, if you want to mess with it.

I prefer the water elevator method to ladders, just for the sake of saving resources. although I am very fond of a circular powered mineshaft to send my hauls back up to my warehouse. I've actually managed to connect my warehouse and about 7 villages at this point, so I've got a small mini boom of an economy going.

Tried the water elevator and managed to kill myself (fortunately most of my diamond and enchanted tools were recovered after the respawn). I think I'll keep "wasting" resources unless I can figure out how to make that method reliable. Seems really counter-intuitive to me, but I probably misunderstood something very simple, or so I hope.

Lumber is a renewable resource, after all.

yeah, I just like the novelty of the elevator XD

See if you where playing on the Blue Box tekkit server, you could jsut drop the mining haul onto a teleporter pad, where they would be processed by an automated smelting and sorting machine of your own disign!!!!!!   Or you could as Wraith to make you one xD  she love being asked to make stuff.

Wondering whether, with the new hoppers and other new redstone features, can I make such a smelter/sorter in vanilla Minecraft?  Haven't really tried, apart from having installed the recent snapshots where those features are present.  I'm afraid with tekkit I might lose all control over my free time. ;)

Not that it will help with managing your time, but I found some of the tutorials on building various machines (in vanilla) enough to maintain interest, but that may only appeal to those interested in playing with "physicalized" virtual logic circuits.  I tend to favor vanilla, since I like to be able to keep the crafting recipes simple and limited enough that I'm not constantly digging into the wiki to recall how to do things.

You're starting to wear me down.  Do you have a link for a tutorial that will ensure that I can manage to go back and forth between tekkit and the vanilla snapshot (right now it's 13w05) that I tend to use with my longstanding maps?

It's not a problem Minecraft and Tekkit are stored on your hard drive in separate locations. all you need do is download the Technic Pack at http://www.technicpack.net/tekkit/

I often have both a Tekkit window and a vanilla window open at the same time or even multiple instances of tekkit.  when you launch the technic launcher it gives you the opptions on the top left for which load you want to use..  it really is quite simple to use. :)

And as Jennifer said, come on over to the dark side. :D

Tekkit is modded minecraft, but it comes prepackaged with it's own .EXE  and it saves in a diffrent folder.  So ya follow the link below and download the tekkit launcher.  Treat it like the minecraft.exe.

http://www.technicpack.net/download

Then when you launch the game it will ask for a log in.   Before you log in select your mod pack.  in this case Tekkit, Lite or Classic.  From the drop down menu in the upper left.  Finally punch you normal minecraft login in to the block in the lower right.

The login details for the Multi player servers is
-Tekkit Classic, 16 man server "Blue Box"  IP: 173.199.66.142:25585

-Tekkit Lite, 16 man server "Little Sister" IP:68.232.178.10:25585

Thanks for the info... I briefly made it onto Blue Box yesterday, shortly after reading Jenn and Colleen's posts, but left as soon as it got dark since I had yet to figure out where I could start building (or finding) shelter.  Then I got lost for hours trying to figure out how some of the stuff in Tekkit works... I think I was getting stuck in the depths of Buildcraft (which I'm not quite sure is fully enabled?) in Tekkit Classic...

Wow, it is SO very different! I knew it would be, I have at least watched various Yogscast and other videos related to some of the more industrial and power generation features of the various mods, which is where I wound up getting confused... mainly about trying to get some basic geothermal generators working once I'd located some lava.

Expect me to try again once I'm got a slightly better sense of my bearings.
