Soda Pop

I was born in NYC and grew up in NJ...it's always been soda to me.

Coke is used as a generic term in much of the south and especially in Georgia.   As in:

"You want a Coke?"

"Sure."

"What kind?"

"Dr. Pepper."

As strange as this may seem, this is a common conversation in Texas and Oklahoma (where I grew up).  If you ask for a soda, you get something with ice cream in it.  If you ask for a pop, the guy behind the bar hollers for his father to come out.  If you use the word "soda pop", everybody just looks at you and figures you are from somewhere else.  "Sody Pop" is an acceptable term in the more "rural" (redneck) areas.

Another strange "southern" custom...for that morning kick, it's not coffee we reach for, it's a "coke".

I have faith in you, Rachel.  If you can break the chains of gender roles, then you might be strong enough to shake off that "Yankee" yoke and learn the true advantages of being a Southern Belle.  There is no better example of womanhood and femininity than a true old-fashioned Southern Lady...except maybe Myrna Loy...LOL

In Oklahoma we generally call it all "a coke" but I grew up all over the US and Canada so I sometimes I still call it "soda" or "pop"....I dunno.

I'm in ohio and I honestly don't know what we call it. When I say pop at McDonalds they look at me like I'm nuts. But in dthru at Arby's they say 'drink'. I just say soda.

It's "pop" here in Michigan.
Soda sound kind of funny to me.
I know down in Tennessee where my sister lives all pop is call coke. So when I go to visit her and order a coke they ask what kind? 
Come to think of it eons and eons ago when I was growing up we called it soda pop.
