Aina

It's been awhile - but I decide to play around with pitch variations with this recent voice recording. However I don't think they are among my best recordings...  :P

Aina, I think the voice sounds a bit minimized. It sould like you are restricting the voice a lot to give it the sound you are having. I could imagine it would be very hard to use that voice out loud lets say in a bus or a cafe?

I also just tried a recordning now after 2 months of weekly voice rehab sesions but the focus of them was not on changing the voice itself but to make me loose the tension. http://vocaroo.com/i/s1GgNsydPdvl

Aye, my problem is my female voice is always changing - since I am pre-everything(as well as coming out) so I am always going back to my male voice. I really need to come out so maybe I can just use my voice full time or my other plan is to slowly raise my voice to my female voice over time and by then maybe I can just come out and this way I am slowly working on my voice.

Anjaq as for the voice recording is sort of low, had to turn my speakers up - but your coming along nicely.

Your voice is great!  I liked every variation, but the third one best.

Your voice in October was great too.  :)

You are pre-everything??  Wow!

I melt when I hear a German accent female voice.  I am butter now.  ;)

LOL - yeah I cannot turn off the accent ;) - personally I think the pitch is way too low. But also the volume of the recording is low an dI dont know why. the mic input setting ist at 100% and it is a USB mic, so it should not be that low. Maybe some secret windows setting...

Slowly changing the voice is not the worst idea I guess, Aina - one thing that really can be done is to change resonacne and inflection and all that without changing pitch at all. It goes a long way and people cannot really accuse you of talkling in a female voice because everyone believes it is about talking in a high pitch :P - but then you are actually talking in a female voice but just with a low pitch that you can then adjust later...

Hehe maybe, I think voice work is one those things you always gotta work at and again if I talk in my female voice awhile it starts to sound better. So again I blame having to go back to male voice and thus its a process of warming up to my female voice.

Anjaq have you tried recording with Praat? I find it does a better job of capturing, plus you can also view your pitch. Also there is Audacity which is a wonderful sound program.

I use PRAAT all the time :) - plus Spectrogram to get a real time view of the input at the same time.
Yes I guess going back to male voice a lot makes it harder - some people can jsut switch back and forth if they are really well trained, but for me it is more like a really tough switch - I can do an approximation of my old voice but it is hard to do. Sadly my present voice is just like 80% female or so, I believe...

I would be fine if I couldn't switch my voice back down... I work over the phone so I'd be thrilled with that.

I concur...actually I have this weird fantasy that I get stuck in my female voice and thus force myself to come out.... :embarrassed:

Well it is possible I guess - to a degree. I am "stuck" in my voice now but it is not really female enough sadly - so I guess you can switch between a male and female voice that mostly is from resonance changes but pitch is an other thing to control independent of that.

Obviously I know more work needs to be done, but it's slowly getting better.

I think that is quite impressive already Cassandra - especially the melody and intonation as far as I can judge that in a foreign language seems to be good. I would say there is only a hint of male resonance here and there and some drops in pitch that are a bit low but I am not sure why you would say that it "obviously does not sound female"???

I think it sounds pretty convincing too. Sometimes a bit of 'maleness' breaks through (the resonance that anjaq-san is talking about as far as I understand it, but your voice has an overall rightness to it already.

I still have a ways to go. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Most people tell me now it's genderless (better than deep male I suppose), but wanted other people's opinion.

http://vocaroo.com/i/s1NgfEoXrJf9

I seem to start off OK, but towards the end I start to hear more maleness in the voice. Although sometimes even at a lower pitch, I can still detect a feminine resonance to seems to work but not all the time. I've only been practicing for 3 months and I'm 6'7" (age 43). Well the rest I talk about in the recording. Despite practicing for 3 months, it only in the last week or two that things seem to be clicking better. (And according to other people.)

It seems to me that when you're consciously thinking about how you talk, putting the effort into using differing tones and pitches like a woman does, you are sounding decent. It's androgynous. And that's because it sounds a bit deep, but you're using some feminine inflections, and you definitely are speaking more in your head, which makes it sound feminine. If that voice was coming from someone who appeared to be female, I probably wouldn't think too much of it.

You do slip back down into a more male inflection pattern a few times, namely the kind of monotone sound where you're not using a lot of upward inflections and whatnot, but again, I think you just need to work on it more, and let the feminine cadences become more second-nature.

You're doing well! That's what I hear in this recording, is potential. You're on the right track in terms of where the voice is coming from in the vocal tract (near the top,) and you've got the beginnings of feminine tones and inflections. Keep practicing, and I think you'll definitely be able to get it sounding completely female.

I couldn't understand what you were saying half the time (I actually thought the first few words were in Chinese when I first heard it,) but your voice definitely sounds 100% female. I could hear no maleness in there whatsoever.

Carrie,

Thank you very much. That pretty much confirms what I had been thinking. It's difficult to get a good reading from friends and family. They have good intentions on trying to help, but they can be inaccurate in because they get used to your voice.

There is nothing male in your singing/chest voice.
