Could any kind person give me feedback on this recording of the "Rainbow Passage" and the million dollar question does it pass ?   I'm pretty new to it all and not sure at all.   Many thanks in advance.

Welcome to Susan's Place. The voice is difficult to judge as the gender is middle of the road. I think the main issue is that the pitch is still a bit on the low side. A secondary consideration would be that the inflection could use a bit more range. I suggest you look at the top of this forum in the stickies and get PRAAT so you can check the pitch that you are using in normal speech. This link will tell you what you are looking for when you use PRAAT.

We issue to all new members the following links so you will best be able to use the web site.

That could sum me up in a number of ways  :)

This sounds more like a femmy gay man's voice, sorry.

As Dena says, pitch is still low.  To my ears it sounds like there's still too much resonance at the bottom of the throat/in the chest, and there's also a nasally quality that gives off the "gay" voice affect.
What you look forward to has already come, but you do not recognize it.

Moonscented, I ran your Rainbow passage through Singscope.  It looks like your pitch is running somewhere around E3, a bit low.  Many of your sentences start off at a good pitch, A3 to B3, but then dip within a word or two. Pitch swings are good, as a feminine voice swings much more than a male voice, but the average should be a bit higher.

(I do pretty much the same thing.  It ain't easy, but I'm working on it.)

Hi Arianna,

I'm no expert but I would suggest you're in the middle.  Your voice sounds pretty androgynous to me.  I can see how people would pick either.   Have you tried playing with Praat the free sound analyzing software.  I would think if you could raise your pitch a bit it might help.

Take care,
Paige :)

I learned about using praat from some YouTube videos, there are a few good ones out there, and then I just sort of experimented with it until I got it to do what I wanted.  Not sure if this is helpful, but I love working with Praat to guage my pitch.  It is wonderful in that regard

This is a complex voice. Mostly I hear male but every so often the pitch and the lilt gives me hints of feminine. My brain keeps switching back and forth. Most people will  likely hear your voice as male and the reason I hear it is because I was trained to listen for clues like that. I suspect in 2-3 months your voice will have dropped enough that it will be solid in the masculine range and the clues I am hearing will be gone.

Interesting thing about your voice is I don't hear that in the MTF voices. MTF voices seem to lock in as one gender and tend not to cross back and forth.

There are three problems I can hear. The first is vocal fry. This is when you allow your voce to drop low and you get the low frequency buzz in your voice. The next issue is pitch. I am unsure if you are using a head voice but it sounds like you might not be. The head voice is simply tensing the upper neck muscles causing the larynx to rise in your neck. Doing this will allow you to gain 40 HZ or more in pitch. The last issues is inflection as your voice still sounds a bit on the flat size. Delay working on inflection until you have the first two under control.

As for Praat, Jenny put an instructional post in the voice forum that will help you get through the basics. If you haven't looked at that, give it a try.

Yes, that's right.

Now when I listen to it myself I hear so many flaws so this is somewhat surprising that I hear something positive about the recording ^^ But thank you very much for listening to it and feedback! To tell you the truth this was one of the most positive things for the last few days and it made me happy! :3

P.S.
That's surprising that so many over the internet tell me that I have French accent, while in real life people tell me it is Slavic. Actually my native language is Russian so as accent (I suppose?)... Do you mind sharing why does it sound French? I am just curious...

I would download Da Tuner from the Google store. It is a guitar tuner you can use to monitor your voice. My therapist wants me to be in the F3 175 htz area.  The monotone is because that is your guy voice at a higher pitch. Women use more of a singsong voice. Emily also told me to find a female celebrity to watch doing interviews and mirror their gestures, facial expression, tempo, notice they smile when they talk. How they use their hands when they talk. Breathing from the diaphragm rather than the chest. I do that by holding my hand on my stomach to make sure I concentrate. Practice practice practice. I use Meryl Streep as my example.
