Frank Zappa's style was rather unique. He didn't conform to standard rules and standard scales.

Can you remember remember my name
As I flow through your life
A thousand oceans I have flown
  And cold spirits of ice
  All my life
I am the echo of your past

I am returning the echo of a point in time
  Distant faces shine
A thousand warriors I have known
And laughing as the spirits appear
  All your life
  Shadows of another day

And if you hear me talking on the wind
  You've got to understand
  We must remain
  Perfect Strangers

I know I must remain inside this silent
    well of sorrow

A strand of silver hanging through the
    sky
  Touching more than you see
The voice of ages in your mind
Is aching with the dead of the night
Precious life (your tears are lost in
    falling rain)

And if you hear me talking on the wind
  You've got to understand
  We must remain
  Perfect Strangers

I sit here alone
I sit here alone
I look at the walls
Look at the walls
Look at the walls
I look at the walls

You shouldn't be out on your own
Oh no not with a condition like that
Oh no sir constant care
A condition like that, a condition so rare
A penny for the guy, a penny for your thoughts
One a penny, two a penny in your pocket
Ding dong bell, who can tell
Wild Man Fisher got nothing on me

I sit by the water
I sit by the water
Watch it go by
Clouds going by
I'm watching the sky

I left my luggage at the station
Didn't know how to say goodbye
I walked away from all the fury
And the madness and the fury
And the madness and the fury
And the madness

I smile to myself
I smile to myself

You're on the blind side, I'm on the other side
Now I'm on the outside looking for another side
Upside down side, I'm still lucid
I may be crazy but I'm not stupid
Try to get out, the parking lot's full
No matter, no matter, what's a man going to do
One two buckle my shoe
Zip my lip

I've been driving all night, my hands wet on the wheel
There's a voice in my head that drives my heel
It's my baby calling, says "I need you here"
And it's a half past four and I'm shifting gear

When she is lonely and the longing gets too much
She sends a cable coming in from above
Don't need no phone at all

We've got a thing that's called radar love
We've got a wave in the air
Radar love

The radio is playing some forgotten song
Brenda Lee's "Coming On Strong"
The road has got me hypnotized
And I'm speeding into a new sunrise

When I get lonely and I'm sure I've had enough
She sends her comfort coming in from above
We don't need no letter at all

We've got a thing that's called radar love
We've got a line in the sky
Radar love

No more speed, I'm almost there
Gotta keep cool now, gotta take care
Last car to pass, here I go
And the line of cars goes down real slow

And the radio played that forgotten song
Brenda Lee's "Coming On Strong"
And the newsman sang his same song
Oh, one more radar lover gone

When I get lonely and I'm sure I've had enough
She sends her comfort coming in from above
We don't need no letter at all

We've got a thing that's called radar love
We've got a line in the sky
We've got a thing that's called radar love
We've got a thing that's called
Radar love

His sloppy, erratic solos is a big part of his appeal for me.

I'm a huge prog rock fan so I do have a thing for flashy technique, but it isn't everything.

I fully agree that flash technique isn't everything.  I just shudder when I think of Neil Young's solo on "Southern Man".  Jimmy Page was sloppy at times, but I found his lead work much more inspiring.  I think Neil Young's strong point is his overall song writing which is why I love him.

I think the solo perfectly fits the anguished mood of the song, but to each their own.

Help, I'm a rock!
Help, I'm a rock!
Help, I'm a rock!
Somebody!
Help, I'm a rock!
Please!
Help, I'm a rock!
Please!
Help, I'm a rock!
Please!
Help, I'm a rock!
Wow!
Help, I'm a rock!
Wow!
Help, I'm a rock!
Help, I'm a rock!
Somebody helps me

Wow, man, it's a drag being a rock
(Help, I'm a rock)
(Help, I'm a rock)
(Help, I'm a rock)
I wish I was anything but a rock
Heck, I'd even like to be a policeman
Hey, you know what?
You know maybe if I practice, you know
Maybe if I pass my driving test
I could get a gig drivin' that bus that pick the freaks up
In front of Ben Frank's, right?

Help, I'm a cop!
Help, I'm a cop!
Help, I'm a cop!
Help, I'm a cop!
(Help, I'm a rock)
Help, I'm a cop!
(Help, I'm a rock)

It's a drag being a cop
I think I'd rather be the mayor

Always wondered what I was gonna be when I grew up, you know
Always wondered whether or not . . . whether or not I could make it
You know, in society, because,
You know, it's a drag when you're rejected
So I tore the cover off a book of matches
And I sent in
And I got this letter back that said . . .

It can't happen here
It can't happen here
I'm telling you, my dear
That it can't happen here
Because I been checkin' it out, baby
I checked it out a couple a times

But I'm telling you
It can't happen here
Oh darling, it's important that you believe me
(Bop bop bop bop)
That it can't happen here

Who could imagine that they would freak out somewhere
in Kansas . . .
(Kansas . . . Kansas . . . Kansas . . . Kansas . . . )
(Kansas, Kansas, do-do-dun to-to
Kansas, Kansas, la la la)
(Kansas, Kansas, do-do-dun to-to
Kansas, Kansas)
Who could imagine that they would freak out in Minnesota . . .
(Mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi
Mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi-mi . . . )
(Mama Minnesota, Mama Minnesota, Mama Minnesota,
Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma Mama Minnesota,
Mama Minnesota, Mama Minnesota,
Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma Mama Minnesota)
Who could imagine . . .

That they would freak out in Washington, D.C.
(AC/DC bop-bop-bop)
(AC/DC do-do-do-dun, AC/DC
Ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-ma, AC/DC)
But it can't happen here
Oh baby, it can't happen here
(AC/DC bop-bop-bop)
Oh baby, it can't happen here
(AC/DC bop-bop-bop)
It can't happen here
Everybody's safe and it can't happen here
(AC/DC bop-bop-bop)
No freaks for us
(AC/DC bop-bop-bop)
It can't happen here
(AC/DC bop-bop-bop)
Everybody's clean and it can't happen here
No, no, it won't happen here
(No, no, it won't happen here)
(AC/DC bop-bop-bop)
I'm telling you it can't
(AC/DC bop-bop-bop)
It won't happen here
Bop-bop-ditty-bop
(I'm not worried at all, I'm not worried at all)
Ditty-bop-bop-bop
Plastic folks, you know
It won't happen here
You're safe, mama
(No no no)
You're safe, baby
(No no no)
You just cook a tv dinner
(No no no)
And you make it
Bop bop bop
(No no no)
Oh, we're gonna get a tv dinner and cook it up
(No no no no no no no!)

Love' s No Friend - Rainbow

Well, I don't need much but I need a friend
Or did you got time for me
Ain't no trouble with you're always down
To find a friend in misery

But that's all right, that's all right
Ain't gonna fall for the line
That's all right, that's all right
Don't need no sun to shine
When love's no friend of mine

I've been so down I've been on my knees
Just don't seem to feel no pain
Natural loser I've been on the run
Got no shelter from the rain

That's all right, that's all right
Ain't gonna fall for the line
That's all right, that's all right
Don't need no sun to shine
No cause love's no friend of mine

Learn to live weather climb above my head
Got no shame, got no pride
If you need affection don't knock on my door
Got no feelings left inside

But that's all right, yes, that's all right
Ain't gonna fall for the line
That's all right, that's all right
Don't need no sun to shine
'Cause love's no friend
'Cause love's no friend
Ah no friend of mine
Love's no friend of mine

I see the innocent victim's
Fighting to get to his door
No chain of events can shackle him down
He's not there anymore
Evil moves, evil ways
With his back to the wall
Evil mind looking down
Without seeing at all

You ain't got a lot to say
Judging by the things you do
If only you could see the tears of pain
In the eyes of the world

Dust to dust by the million
Broken dreams in the ground
Aching hearts in the half dreams of home
Where their spirits are down
Evil takes, evil kills
With no shame or concern
Killing me, killing you
Watch the end of the burn

Maybe you don't understand
We don't need you anymore
If only you could see the tears of pain
In the eyes of the world

And in the name of religion
For the hate in our soul
For the blind and the sick in the heart
War has taken its toll
Evil moves, evil ways
With his back to the wall
Evil mind looking down
Without seeing at all

Eyes of the world
Don't wanna, don't wanna cry no more
Eyes of the world
In the eyes
Eyes of the world
You ain't got a lot to say
Eyes of the world
Why's it have to be this way
Eyes of the world
Oh, oh, oh
Eyes of the world
We don't need you anymore
Eyes of the world
If only you could feel the tears of pain
In the eyes of the world

Hah, glad I'm not the only one who loves that one, the violin solo from Jean-Luc Ponty is the bomb.

Over-Nite Sensation is probably the best of Zappa's more comedy oriented albums.
