I was thinking about some transition issues. Never a good thing, but there's a lot, and I mean a LOT of things I will be facing in the coming months. Anyway, Azzie said to me that she didn't identify as transgender. I couldn't let that slide. Especially after all the bull$^!* I've had to claw my way though during my transition. I told her that it didn't matter what she identified as, the fact is that she, like Caleb and myself, switched to opposite teams. She didn't like that. So rather than lose my temper, I left.
It's like she doesn't get it. You can't outrun your past. Nor can you forget it.
Later on, she told Caleb that we never have intelligent conversations. I've never seen Caleb so angry. But, It's hard to have an intelligent conversation if you don't even participate!! And we watch documentaries together, discuss science, books, trans issues, music....
Oh, I'm still mad. I'm not currently feeling it because I took one of those pills to see how class would go (i.e., no more panic attacks and cancelling class) but it's made me a little more strung out than usual. =/ ANYWAY. I'm still mad, lol, for a whole lot of reasons.

As you said, we do have intelligent discussions and do a lot more than silliness. I think what bothered me the most was I was thinking back to the discussion you and I had about
Orlando. The way you just, completely understood the book on the deepest level was incredible. I find so often in classes, students try to engage but don't get those small details and nuances that make all the difference. But you do. That was the first time I truly realized you're on my wavelength with that.
You are intelligent. You may not have a lot of desire to go into an academic environment and sit down and exist in that structure, but that doesn't mean anything...it means you learn a lot differently. And that's a good thing, you know. Too many people want to sit down, have info fed to them, barf it back up on a test, be done with it and get their degree/job. You want to learn for the sake of learning...you want to get right in there and understand the nitty gritty of whatever it is you're interested in learning. I like that. We need more of that. Besides that, you teach me about a lot of things because you know different types of things than I do. That, in the end, is what it's really all about.
To put down your intelligence, or how well you show your intelligence, just because we can also enjoy rock music, toilet humor, perhaps the occasional touch of slapstick, is such an oversimplification. To me, it's not seeing the forest for the trees.
