I want to know what the transgender community thinks about the American jerry springer show and its negative portrayal of transgender people, especially transwomen. Can transpeople ever gain full equal rights and respect from Americans as long as the jerry springer show is still airing? What are your thoughts about those supposed transgender individuals who disgrace themselves on the show for a few tokens? Also, Does the jerry springer show promote hatred of transpeople(Transphobia)?

The Springer show gives a negative portrayal of anyone on it, regardless of what group of people they belong to. I really don't think it harms us that bad, the people that watch it usually have a backwards view of many things in the first place, the show really isn't going to completely change accepting people's mind about anything as its outlandish enough not to be seen as too serious in the first place.

It's a TV show... there are TV shows about a myriad of topics, many of which ideologically conflict with each other.

Americans are a diverse group and to paint the entire society by selecting one tv show is no better than the islamic protests against america because one guy made a film.

The Springer show is nothing but filth plain and simple. Its the lowest common denominator and a "black eye" for American(Or any) media/entertainment companies. If you notice, the show is not just negative torwards Trans folks. It misrepresents women, overweight folks, Blacks, Whites, Latinos, & any other group that was portrayed! It doesn't matter if its an episode on trans issues or spring break love triangles. Its just plain filth!

As far as any media that portrays Trans folks in a "good light", I haven't seen a whole lot.  ::)

The first year Springer was on the air, it was a great show. He dealt with interesting issues from a real life perspective. Sometime during the first couple seasons, though, he realized the shows where people went nuts drew bigger ratings, so he changed the format of the show.

I don't blame Springer. If people didn't watch, he wouldn't broadcast.
Have you read my short story The Eve of Triumph?

I stopped watching it years ago, after one of his guests shot another in the car park after the show, because he confessed he had a gay crush on him.  Totally off goon.

We had Jerry Springer on in the shop most afternoons.  The TV tech needed to burn in the TVs after the repair or to try to duplicate the customer's complaint.  My last shop location my company put us in was in a large single loft room meant for warehousing with no drop acoustic ceilings and no audio barriers between the benches.  We all can hear the goings-on of the Springer show and we all hated it.  Too many *BLEEPS* and too many fights with every imaginable twist that Jerry can put on.  And that JER-RY! JER-RY! JER-RY! chant going off so frequently.

It's still on the air?!

That was my response!  I remember watching it when I would stay home from school sick sometimes.

As for my opinion - the only "good" talk show that I remember from 15 years ago was that my mother loved Montel Williams and he seemed to do some pretty cool stuff. But Jerry Spring is like pretty much all the other ones - it's just cheap (often times poorly scripted - not always, but sometimes for sensationalism) trash entertainment that comes on during mid-day television. I can't blame him, he is just doing what gets him the most ratings and frankly, I imagine the networks do a lot of the planning for the shows. I mean, lets take a look at what has become of TLC...

Overall though, I haven't personally met anyone who was over the age of 15 (mentally, since I have plenty of folks who adults physically but not mentally) who watched things like Jerry Springer. So, I assume it is only really reflective of a certain population. I'm not sure though, since I haven't watched television (outside of the presidential debates) in about 9 years and I don't know virtually anyone who watches TV regularly aside from my Dad and his sports.

Are all you people here delusional? The Maury and Jerry Springer show are different from each other. The Maury show does not promote hatred. It only positively raises awareness of Trans people.  Where as, The Jerry Springer show contributes to transphobia. If you do not believe me just look at the Jerry Springer transsexual episodes on youtube. I'm a stealth transman and every time the topic of transgender individuals comes up in my inter circle of guy friends(cis) it is always related to those freaks on the show pretending to be transgender deceiving men.  Even Jerry Springer seems to be making fun of transgender people instead of educating the audience. The show does make fun of other people, but currently done of those people are hated as much as the Transgender community.  I will have to disagree about the show only targeting uneducated and younger people as an audience.  Everyone I know watches the show and they are not just young uneducated people. They ranged from all ages and professions.  I even heard governors and politicians boosting about how much they loved the Jerry Springer show. No, I do not think we will ever have equal rights as long as the media and the Jerry Springer show keeps negatively portraying transgender people, especially in America. At least in my lifetime and I'm only 21. BTW, good topic.

Possibly the last time I watched Jerry Springer was when he had a MTF on the show, she was very attractive & I would have never guessed her past.
Jerry got a man to lie on a massage table, she started giving him a massage complete with oil & part way through either Jerry or her revealed the truth, this man jumped off the table & looked ready to hit this woman, I was so disgusted I stopped watching.

The Jerry Springer is the lowest of the low, I feel sorry for anyone who gets dragged onto that show, the people who drag partners/friends onto that show should be ashamed of themselves.

...Maybe? But I did the same thing, too. <.<
Even though they were destroying their image, I still envied them. Odd.
