Obama Tells MTV He Won't Push Gay Marriage In Second Term

During a live interview today inside the White House, President Obama told MTV viewers that when it comes to same-sex marriage and climate change, it would be up to future generations of Americans to implement meaningful reforms.

When asked if he would use his second term as a platform to overturn the federal ban on gay marriage, the president demurred, saying he viewed it as an issue for the states to decide.

"For us to try to legislate federally into this area is probably the wrong way to go," Obama told MTV presenter Sway Calloway, who asked questions submitted by youth voters.

Yeah, its a little late for that since they put DOMA up there. Besides, wildly varying laws regarding marriage between states can lead to many issues as people move around the country.

Not to mention that once we get re-elected we can do a flip-flop (like G. H. Bush, did,"" read my lips," "no more taxes," which translated to "read my hips!!!")

I honestly don't think the Federal Government should have the ability to tell people who they can and can not get married to.

I also think the Government shouldn't have the right to charge me on my taxes if I don't have health insurance. That would be like charging someone more money on their property tax if they don't have home owners insurance.

Except if you want or need (and sooner or later everyone does) heath care then it should be there for you, even if you put nothing into it?  The law sucks, largely because it's not a single payer solution, but it's better than what we have now.

You have one candidate who says, "I believe in equal rights and non-discrimination, except in the institution of marriage."

You have another candidate who held the same position for the first three years of his Administration, did not advance the marriage equality agenda when empowered to do so, has an election year "change of heart," then says two weeks out from losing the election, "nevermind."

Who would you trust on the equal rights issue?

From 2009 to 2011, the Democrats had complete control of the political agenda, with the Executive Branch, Nancy Pelosi in the House, and Harry Reid with a filibuster-proof Senate.

And yet, they did not repeal DOMA.  They did not even get ENDA out of committee.

How does it feel to be "used and abused"?
