The White House has indicated that even if new federal hate crimes legislation passes Congress today, the President will veto it.

We thank President Bush for honoring our nation's constitutional tradition of equal protection under the law," said Matt Barber, Policy Director for Cultural Issues at Concerned Women for America.  The Executive Office of the President has issued a statement promising to veto "hate crimes" bill H.R. 1592 should it be approved in Congress today.

Bush would veto this bill.....

Right... how could I be so stupid to think that he'd let this one pass.  I'm sick and tired of this president.

'Hate Crimes' Vote on National Prayer Day Angers Some Christians
CNSNews
By Randy Hall

"There will be no shortage of things to pray for on this National Day of Prayer as the Congress takes a dark first step toward criminalizing public statements of sincerely held religious beliefs," Rev. Louis Sheldon, founder and chairman of the Traditional Values Coalition, said in a news release.

I've read the bill.  I see nothing wherein upstanding "Christians" would be persecuted for their right to free speech.  The bill opposes only "violent" crimes that produce "bodily harm".  What in the world are they concerned about?

Oh.... it has the homosexual thing in it.  Just put it in print and they will oppose it.

Talk about misrepresentation!

One of the articles I read stated that some of the religious right even put up Wanted Posters with Jesus on them.   ::)  I just wish that some of the faithful would take 20 minutes and read through the bill twice and then realise how much they have been lied to by their "leaders".

It's amazing how many people just soak in the drivel that their religious leaders spew.  It didn't even take me twenty minutes to read this thing.... both the senate and house versions.

I don't suppose we would be having this bill proposed if there hadn't been extraordinary violence against us in the first place?  Why do these people think that this thing was even created?

Oh... and I hope you feel better LIT.  Sleep well.  It's almost weekend time.

Let's see-- what if there were a grisly murder at the home of Mary Cheney, with homophobic slurs scrawled on the walls of the house.

Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church is afraid they can't threaten to picket the funeral with their hate slogans and extort a ton of money from daddy to not to...

Right -- religious freedom -- free speech -- ...i see...

I may not like hate crimes bills, but this veto sends a darker message that possibly hurting people who are gay/bi/lesbian/etc is a-okay by law.

Well, it sure will be a good test of Congress and the Senators and Representatives, and especially the Presidential candidates. Are there enough votes to override the veto? They can rest assured it will be remembered in 2008. We can hope, but I'm not holding my breath.
