GLAAD: More than half of transgender images on TV in past decade have been negative
Study released on Transgender Day of Remembrance

The CBS drama CSI once featured a transgender serial killer who murdered his own mother. Fox's The Cleveland Show showed a man vomiting for a lengthy period of time after discovering he had slept with a transgender person. FX's Nip/Tick had an entire season of a psychopathic trans woman depicted as a baby-stealing sexual predator who sleeps with her own son.

It's examples like these that illustrate why US television has done such a poor job overall in its portrayals of transgender characters in the past decade, according to a study released Tuesday (20 November) by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

GLAAD went through 10 years of episodes of transgender-inclusive television episodes (102 in all) and found that more than half (54 percent) were negative representations of transgender people.

In addition, 35 percent were categorized at ranging from 'problematic' to 'good' while only 12 percent were considered groundbreaking, fair and accurate.

In recognition of Transgender Awareness Week and the Transgender Day of Remembrance, GLAAD has reviewed its archives of transgender-inclusive television episodes over the past ten years, and found that a great deal of progress still needs to be made for fair and accurate depictions of the transgender community.

GLAAD reviews television portrayals of transgender characters: tv is not helping

GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has studied 102 episodes and non-recurring story lines scripted for television over that past 10 years that contained transgender characters.  They discovered that 54% of those representations were negative, while 35% were judged between problematic and good.  Only 12% were considered "groundbreaking."

As an example GLAAD singled out CSI (aka CSI: Las Vegas) for featuring a transgender serial killer who murdered his own mother, The Cleveland Show for featuring a man who vomits onscreen for a long time after discovering that he slept with a transwoman, and Nip/Tuck which featured an entire season about a psychopathic transwoman who is depicted as a "baby-stealing sexual predator who sleeps with her own son."

GLAAD also noted that transgender characters were cast as victims 40% of the time, cast as killers/villains 21% of the time, and depicted as sex-workers 20% of the time.  Anti-transgender slurs, language, and dialogue were present in at least 61% of the episodes and story lines.

Fox's The Cleveland Show showed a man vomiting for a lengthy period of time after discovering he had slept with a transgender person.

I've never watched Cleveland Show, but they did this on Family Guy, the talking dog slept with a trans woman who was very much the stereotypical non-passing trans woman; one that literally just looked like a man in a dress. Then showed the character that slept with the trans woman vomiting for a few minutes of air time after said character found out the one they slept with was transgender. I know because I walked in on a friend watching this episode. They've made other negative transgender portrayals and "jokes" in the past. One the many, many reasons I don't watch this show anymore, or any other shows this guy comes out with
