Telyna

I just finished my first month of Kirkland Minoxidil 5% ,3 weeks in it started to shed like crazy all vellus hair (way more then I thought I had, and there still is a buckload left  ) and if it regrows like I hope can I switch to taking Finasteride to keep the hair or should I slowly decrease the use of Minoxidil .If everything goes well and I visit a dermatologist for propecia (proscar) in a month or so and take them both at the same time can I stop using Minox after a year or so and just continue with Proscar ?

Im 20 and I started balding halfway through  18

Does minoxidil work?:if yes, how well when paired up with Spiro, finasteride and estradiol?

Good luck,
Andrea

Even after years on hrt, I still use minoxidil and will continue at least until I have srs. I only apply it one time a day though and its been enough to make my hair thicker and fill in the bald spot.

I don't know. For me personally, I hope I won't have to once the testosterone is pretty much gone for good. But I know they make it for women too, so there is always a chance it could still be necessary afterwards. I imagine the need varies among people.

If I stop using it after just a month is the shedded hair dependant in it

I don't mind. I really only know about my own experience and also what a really good hair stylist guy told me.  I've had good luck with it, but I know that it may not work for everyone. But I would definitely give it a shot before I would jump on transplants, huge price difference...

There is no point in getting a hair transplant if you have not dealt with the cause of your hair loss. This cause is presumably male pattern baldness, to solve this you need to reduce the amount of DHT in your system since this is what causes your hair follicles to shrink and ultimately die. I guess minoxidil type stuff can also work since it increases blood flow to the regions you apply it to which can help prevent hair follicle death (I think).

However if you do not deal with the cause then you will continue to suffer from hair loss around the region where you had the transplant since the native hairs in that region will still be of the type susceptible to enshrinkulation from DHT. I believe most hair transplant places recommend the use of finasteride to prevent the formation of DHT.

Course goin ahead with transition tends to also deal with the DHT.

PS This is just personal research, I have no qualifications or professional knowledge.

@Telyna, I believe you have to continue use or you will lose your gains. Besides it sounds to me like you have only lost your vellus hairs so far which really is not so much a gain... Why would you want to now stop using it? Far as I am aware finasteride is the best anti hair loss drug commonly used. If your serious about keeping your hair or if really lucky regaining some I would research that some more. I have been using it for a month now almost and I think it works. However it takes months to have a real affect, I am using it pre-emptively, since I cannot bear to allow my hairline to get any worse.

@All
Let me mention that I have been taking finasteride, along with Estradiol, Progesterone, and androblockers for the past 3-1/2 months and my hair has gotten visibly thicker. I do have bald temples though and I wonder whether minoxidil would improve my situation. I wonder if somebody could share their before and after pictures and/or experiences.

I will need transplants I believe but the more hair I have the less it'll cost...

minoxidil will generally not help with the temple area. Its mostly for the crown of the head. I still put a few drops on the front part though, I figure it can't hurt.

Your hair looks great in your avatar... did you ever have any real balding, if I may ask?

Yes, the back of my head was almost bare, like glaring in the sun kind. Now its filled back in pretty good, but it was a combination of hrt, finasteride and minoxidil that worked for me. And I only take the fin every other day at the advice of a stylist I went to that said he was told that by a doctor friend of his. I used to have to hold a mirror up to see the back of my head in the big mirror so I could comb enough hair over the spot to hide it, now I don't have to worry about it.

It sounds great, Jaime!!!! I an in the same situation you were.

I wonder if minoxidil did it or finasteride did it... or maybe the two together....

Why finasteride only every other day, though?

You apparently don't need that much for it work for hair loss and taking it every other day cuts it in half as compared to the normal dosage for hair loss treatment. Of course, I imagine it varies by person too, but its worked for me.

Minoxidil gave me chest pain and so I wasn't on it for a long time. I couldn't tolerate finasteride.

Dutasteride, on the other hand, worked wonders for me! I stopped losing hair within a month.
