Are cheap wigs useful for this?

O.K.   Has anyone bought one of those cheap Fashion Wigs off eBay?  All I need is a dirt cheap wig that can be used to experiment with a few looks, makeup and clothing.  Not to wear in public.  I'll get a human hair wig before next December, but there's no reason to spend a lot on a wig that could be completely off mark for how I finally look.  So is there anything good that can be said of this silly idea?  Or are these wigs too badly made to be useful?

Oh, finally started electrolysis yesterday.   Survived having my upper lip done with only some discomfort.   Yay!   ::)

As scary as it may sound to do, you are far better off finding a wig shop. While they might not have the exact combination on the shelf that you like, you do get to compare styles and colors. Occassionally you find a style you like but the shop does not have in the color you like best. I've found that the shops I've been to are TG friendly. If there is a local support group they may have some insights as to where to go.

If your long term plan is to purchase a human hair wig you are talking serious $$$$ to do a shot in the dark as to what color and style best suits you. Plus you get a second opinion along with a sanity check at a brick & mortar store. Synthetic wigs, unlike human hair wigs, cannot be restyled. What you buy is what you live with.

Buying a wig online I've found entails a fair ammount of risk. Even with more expensive wigs. Color rings only tell you part of the story. A locket of hair is far different looking than a headfull. Plus any of the multi-colored varieties the samples are almost useless.

Joanne:  A good wig will be a must before going out, and I have a long way to go for that.  But
I know of a nice wig shop in San Mateo, about 15 miles south of San Francisco, and that's probably where the good wig will come from next fall.  Even though there are many more shops in SF, I hate shopping there.  (too busy)  Anyway I'm in San Mateo at least once a week for other things.

The wigs on ebay are the very cheep $12 to $50 dollars, and are used mostly for dress up at dance clubs, or for cosplay.  They can't be good at this price.  The wig would also have to be gray highlighted, which is harder to find.

Here's an example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hot-Sell-New-Fashion-Medium-Blonde-Mix-Brown-Straight-Womens-Lady-Hair-Wig-Wigs-/120955041291?pt=US_CSA_MWA_Wigs_Extensions&hash=item1c297b760b

Cheap wigs would be good for playing around.  Definitely not for every day life.

It does not take courage or bravery to change your gender.  It takes fear of living one more day in the wrong one.~me
