Woahhh, I have a job interview in two and a half hours.

I don't pass, but I started T last Friday... so it's definitely something that's going to come up in the next few months, if I do, by some miracle, get hired. I figure I'll probably just go in and not worry about saying anything, because I don't think it matters honestly. It's illegal to deny someone a job based on just their sexual orientation, and if I just come off as a huuuuge dyke...

I don't know. I think that getting the job is more important, at this point. My boyfriend seemed surprised that I was willing to go in and be read female... but I just feel like telling them anything else would complicate things. It could be something that doesn't really need to come up at all. What should they care if I'm a girl or a boy?

Going by your profile photo thing I'd say you pass... What is your legal name/sex on all your documents? Or what name did you apply for the job with? It might be easier now not to say anything but it's going to be pretty awkward when the female they thought they'd employed comes in with a beard, especially if you wouldn't be starting the job for a couple of months.

I agree, if you don't pass right now (or name isn't changed) there is no reason to complicate things.

I'm not that far into transitioning yet. As soon as I speak, it definitely clears up any doubts. My voice is too feminine for me to be able to pass at all in a job interview... and I haven't changed my name, though I don't actually plan to at the moment. I just go by a shortened version of it. I'm going to change my middle name at some point, but it's not a priority yet.

It definitely could be awkward in a few months. I can see pros and cons to both options here, telling them or not telling them, but since it will come up eventually anyway, I might just roll with it and see what happens.

Well, as it turns out, not an issue. Nothing about gender on the applications, I got hired, and I wore a button-down shirt and pants (business casual) and he said that was fine.

I'm not sure anyone is looking for a job right now, but the company, Vector Marketing, is hiring in several places. I checked just to see, and there were openings both where my dad lives and where my mom lives (in case I end up moving back home anytime soon...). It's sales -- so a sort of intimidating thing, but the manager here is cool at least. 🙂

Be careful. Vector Marketing is Cutco cutlery. My gf did the classes and sales thing through them and never got paid. This was around 2006.

Not trying to bum you out. Just trying to make you aware in case something does happen. Google them...there is a lot of info about other people who had bad experiences. I hope you don't.

I feel somewhat manipulated now. I also feel as though I should have looked more into the company before jumping onto the bandwagon. It did seem like one of those "too good to be true" things... Bummer.

Hey man.... not trying to bust a bubble or anything. But not all companies have yet adopted a non discrimination act for sexual orientation. I graduated with an HR degree... so unfortunatly it's the hard truth.

And half the time... it's so hard and expensive to prove that's the reason someone didn't get the job, that it's almost pointless. So yea man... until you're comfortable enough and can legally state your gender and name as you wish they were, then it's better off to just not say anything. I know it isn't fair nor comfortable, I'm in the same shoes, just recently going to a job interview. But it's like you said, you care more about getting a job right now. Haha we have to make money now in order to pay for the things we need so we don't have to worry about explaining ourselves later! Hope all goes well!
