"What's 0.35 divided by 2?"

That was a question asked to me by a freshman at my high school. We're talking about a specialized school that requires students pass a test to get in. How easy has that test gotten, for crying out loud?

An indictment of the US education system. Honestly, it infuriates me beyond belief when someone pulls out a calculator to perform basic arithmetic.  >:(

Yeah, the world is a disgrace. I don't think people care anymore if everyone is stupid.

If it involves decimals of a high percentage and division I'll generally pull out a calculator.  I have a hard time understanding math and always have.

Anyway...

I went to the SAGA meeting and I'm glad.  A friend convinced me to go.  It was just the pick-me-up that I needed.

Well, that's fine, I suppose, Mr. history major, but if a kid wants to attend a TECHNICAL high school, s/he should learn how to perform basic arithmetic. It's not really that hard. 0.35 divided by two is basically asking, "What number when added to itself gives you 0.35?"

Answer: 0.175. Done.  :(

My thoughts exactly, Diana. Division by two is easier than Pi  ;D

Also, bacon is mocking me right now. Had a piece this morning because I've been on this starvation diet for two weeks.
Why does bacon taste so delicious  :'(

Dude, starvation diets never work. They just stress you out, which isn't healthy.

In addition to my earlier tale, the girl said, "That's what I hate about modern society. Just because you don't feel like doing some math, people think you're a dumbass."

Saying that you don't feel like doing something means that it requires effort on your part, which shouldn't be for such a simply operation. The funny part is that she even used the computer calculator wrong.

I inadvertently ended up losing a bunch of weight by starving...I had been sick and then it just was harder and harder to eat proper amounts even when I was better. I looked really sick for a long time. It took like 6 months to begin looking human again.

>.>; I wouldn't have gotten that answer without some long division on a sheet of paper. XD

But if you're getting into a technical school you should know basic math.   I know enough to divide, multiply, and do averages [all that's needed to be a history teacher].  Sometimes I can actually do other types of math, but it's rare.  Overall, it just confuses me.

I second starvation diets.  It also makes the body want to hold onto fat more instead of letting you lose it, at least at first.

Not that I have room to talk.  I've had a total of one meal [two tuna sandwiches] and a coke or two in the last 24 hours.  I just woke up too late for breakfast, didn't have time to make dinner before the SAGA meeting, and after the meeting I didn't feel like stopping to eat...Then when I got home all I wanted to do was lay in bed [which I've been doing the last hour].  -.-;  But now I have a migraine from hell. @.< It just makes me want to eat even less.

It's not a starvation diet so much as something to get my cholesterol down and try to ease up the inflammation in my body. I'm just complaining because I like red meat and mushrooms and potatoes and grilled cheese and salt, and all of those are a big red no on this diet. Plus salmon is just terrible IMO.

This is my gripe too! Kids graduate from high school and want a job as a cashier in a store but can't do simple general math to tally up the customer's items, add in tax and make change when there is a temporary power outage. I saw an 8th grade quiz sheet from the late 1800's that today's college grads would surely fail. America's scholastic institutions are passing out big GPA's to people destined to failure. The dumbing down of America is operational and on full speed ahead!

I want food but I don't want to spend money on the food and I don't want to deal with the dishes in the sink.

Being home sick is great. It's just the sick part that sucks.

getting up at 4:45 then going to work for only a few hours makes it seem like a long day and its just now lunch.

An old roommate once told me that days felt longer after he started sleeping at night...

crazy at the coast

I've worked 2 pm to 10:30 pm for the last couple years, but since we have new people, I'm going to opening shift. More hours and it's going to be nice to be at home in the evenings. It means I have a lot of paperwork to do now along with going to the bank every day I work to make the deposits, but I don't have to do all the cleanup stuff that I did before. My dog has to get used to the new schedule though. He got mad at me this morning though and peed on my pillow in the living room, the little s**t.
