Hey, so, I don't have my name changed yet (I'm hoping that I can get it done within the next month), and I'm hoping to start joining some clubs in my city before then. Should I put my legal name or my preferred name?

Unless it is something "legal", you don't need to use your given name. I'm wary of a lot of things as I own a house and so on. But for other sorts of uses, I sign my chosen name.

I want to pick up kendo and indoor rockwall climbing. Both of which have fees.

Alright, I'll keep that in mind. I'd hate to have something as silly as a name keep me from doing what I love.

I know that here I'd be concerned about using the wrong name and it having an effect on their insurance. I don't know how that works where you live though, so it might be best to ring or email them, ask, and then join up a couple of days later with the appropriate name so they don't connect you.

I don't think that should be a problem here in the US, unless they ask to see you ID to make sure you're giving them the legal name or you have to fill out legal forms. I've been to rock climbing gyms before, and I never had to show an ID, just fill out a waiver saying I wouldn't sue them--on that form, a legal name would be required to make it binding (although most waivers you can easily get around in court if something does go wrong), but since they didn't ask to see an ID at either gym I went to, you could easily just use your male name, especially if you're going to be changing it next month anyway.
