In 1996, Radio Diaries gave tape recorders to teens around the US. One of those teens was Amanda, a lesbian from a conservative Catholic family whose parents were unsupportive and thought she was going through a phase.

Radio Diaries had Amanda record parts of her life over the past year to show where she is now. Her parents are now supportive of her and work they work with other families to help them accept children's homosexuality.  You can listen to the 1996 recording "Girlfriend" and the revisited recording "2013: A Family 'Evolves'".
