Here's the third and final part of a survey I started a few months ago (the second part is here, the first here). Remember to the mods as I said before - I am not seeking information to identify individuals but rather for statistical purposes only. Also even though my post count is technically too low for posting links, I hope you don't mind the links to the tools to assist you if necessary; if that's a problem you can delete this topic or edit the links out. This part deals with the popularity of your chosen name; there are two questions being asked. This poll is mainly targeted at our U.S. members (who can use sources like the SSA's list and tools like this) to accurately see where their name stands, but if you have similar stats available (or know where your name generally stands) from your country you can participate too. As with the last round vote only if you've at least made a "final" decision for your name; if you're still deciding then please abstain from voting.

Your first vote should go to the choice asking where your chosen name ranked for your year of birth (Top 20, 21-100, 101-1,000, or >1,000). Your second vote should go to the statement that best describes when your chosen name peaked (i.e. most common for roughly your generation*, most common on an older generation that yours**, most common on a younger generation than yours***, the name peaked for an older generation and has since been revived for a younger generation****, or the name has no strong generational associations respectively either because it's been fairly consistently popular or has never been common enough to be a "typical" name for a particular age group*****).

Examples of each in relation to a female of my age (born in the 1980s) are (so you can get an idea of what I'm asking):
*Nicole (peaked around that time)
**Linda (peaked at an earlier time)
***Olivia (peaked at a later time)
****Lillian (peaked earlier and has since been revived)
*****Elizabeth (consistently popular) or Daphne (never very popular)
Of course answer in relation to your birth year, so if you're a baby boomer (for example) Nicole would be in the third group rather than the first, and Linda would be in the first group rather than the second.

ZoeM

Zoe's something like 539 for '89. Of course, today it's significantly more popular - in the 30s or so. Can't imagine way.
Don't lose who you are along the path to who you want to be.

Bethany does not show in the top 1000 for 1966 but Beth is in the top 100 and since I will answer to either I answered top 100.
  •

Sarah Louise

Sarah showed up as 76th in the 40's.  There was only one girl named Sarah in my high school class.

But then I never considered the meaning of my name, the popularity, etc when I chose it.

Carrie Liz

#11
"Carrie" was 96th most popular for my birth year, 1985, (as opposed to 34th most popular for my birth name.)

Technically the name "Carrie" had two peaks... its first peak was way back in the 1880's, when it was the 22nd most popular name, but then plummeted down to like the 200th most popular name throughout the 40's and 50's, and then suddenly had a secondary peak in the 1970's, up to 43rd most popular, and has been dropping like a rock ever since. Now in 2013, it's not even in the top 1000 anymore.

Oddly enough, though, the name "Caroline," which "Carrie" is the diminutive form of, hasn't really changed in popularity at all over the years. So while the name "Carrie" has been as high as 22nd in the 1880's and as low as 1753rd in 2012, "Caroline" has pretty much never changed, always being near the bottom of the top 100. Weird...

And hell, an even funnier thing that I've noticed from looking at these name charts, is that the diminutive form of my male name, "Charlie," (which is what I still go by for the time being,) is actually almost as popular nowadays among girls as it is among boys. I personally find that hilariously ironic.

My name was in top 88 for 60's when I was born but variations were more common

Jennygirl

I lol'd

My name "Jennifer" was ranked #1 all the way from 1970 until 1984, the year I was born. So I guess my name is age appropriate. But #1? Yikes!

@jennygirl - Their are lots of popular Jennifer's too and I don't think it's just because of the popularity of the name. People also have to be determined and outgoing. Something you seem to do so well. Just curious do you have a middle name picked out already?

oh my sister is also a Jennifer born in 1980, Jennifer Michelle.

I thought about my chosen name for like a month before I picked Jamie and I didn't care about "popularity". I just found that I like it very much and it's a variation on my middle name also and it's just happens to be the same initials as my sisters.

Cheers Jamie

Jamie that is sooo sweet of you :) you just made my day!! Aww :D

I chose to use my mother's name for my middle name: Elizabeth. So I have been signing emails and other various things with Jenny Elizabeth. At first my mother wasn't really feeling Jennifer because she wanted to name me Leah if I was born a GG, but she was very happy with it when she heard my choice of middle :)

Is Marie your middle name or last name?
  •

Jamie Marie

Oh, my middle name is Marie.

Elizabeth is a beautiful name and I'm glad your mother likes your usage.

Hadn't thought about Leah, reminds me of Princess Leah from Star Wars lol  :D

I've been trying to pick baby names lately, long story.

Maxwell had a rank of 177 in the US during my birth year, and hit an upward spike from the late '80s, peaking in 1999. It then dropped very slightly and has been climbing again since. For 2012, its rank sits sits at 116. I like it because while I've known plenty of people named Max, it was either a diminutive of Maximilian or just nothing- so I get to be called Max and still be special  ::) Kidding of course.
