Joe.

Does anyone know of any masculine hair cuts that aren't really short but not too long either? My hair is kind of old Justin Bieber style but it's got long now and that's the biggest problem with my passing it seems. I want something kind of like Louis Tomlinson but I need the style to be on a woman in order to show my hairdresser as I'm not out to her as trans and don't want her to think I'm deliberately trying to look like a guy. I also need to be able to look female for work.

I kind of like this >

but I'd want it a little shorter on top. Does anyone know of any similar styles that are like this but on a female or any other cuts that will help me pass?

I think it's fine to show the guy picture, just say "I know this is a guy's haircut, but I want something kind of like this". The one in the post here could go either way, so I don't see the problem with outing yourself.

You could always try getting away with an edit like this:

Since justin bieber doesnt really pass, my advice would be to avoid his hairstyle like the plague.

The Pompadour is always a good choice in my mind! That's what I'm rocking right now, pre t:)
They always told me life is what you make it, no thanks I'd rather fake it. To me life's a party so let's do it naked! >:-)

I don't really care much about my hair... so usually I just go in and point at a guy with hair I like and say "give me something like that" and it's usually at some cosmetology school so it's cheap... but they'd always still charge me for a woman's haircut even though I was getting men's haircuts.  My last one, however, I printed out three pictures of guys haircuts that I liked aspects of, went to my friend's salon and pointed out the attributes of each haircut that I liked and she kind of put them together.  I told her my main thing was hiding my feminine hairline... which I think she did just fine.  She didn't ask me anything or say anything (it was in front of my family) that could have outed me... She also didn't look surprised or anything.  I think you'd be fine going in with a picture of a guy.  If you're worried about your hairdresser, just go to a different one.

I think you really would be fine going in with a picture of a guy. One of my best friends who is a cis-gender female wanted to get her hair cut short and brought in a picture of Matt Smith and told the hair stylist that she wanted her hair to be cut just like that, haha. The hair stylist didn't question it at all. If it still makes you nervous, though, AlexanderC's photoshopped head swap of that hair cut looks pretty convincing to me!

You're lucky you had a friend with a salon to go to! I've taken pictures of the same hairstyle I wanted from different angles before, AND EVEN DREW PICTURES ON THE SIDE SO THEY COULD SEE THE CUT BETTER since the ref pics all had black hair...and they still gave me the most awful haircuts I've ever seen. :/ That was when I started cutting my hair on my own, and I can do a MUCH better job than any licensed hairdresser around here can, even in the back of my head where I can't see. My friends even come to me now when they want their hair cut.

And as someone who cuts others' hair, I think it's perfectly acceptable to take a men's haircut to the hairdresser and ask for it as a "female". If that's the cut you want, it shouldn't matter whether the model is male or female. It's the hair they're styling, not your entire face, and a good hairdresser will respect that.

Keep in mind, if a hairdresser tries to talk you out of a man's cut, or if they seem in a hurry to get you in and out of the chair, ask for someone else. They're obviously not confident enough to give you what you want. If you have a particular hairdresser (which is what I'm getting is the situation), tell her you just like the cut and want to try something new and brave.

There's a neat webpage that gives you names of cuts which could be useful: http://haircutsformen.org/buzz/pages/cutsshort.htm
(you can look up medium and long hair cuts too)

The pompadour, and spiky hairstyles similar to them, tend to make passing difficult, especially because they expose the hairline. Most guys can't pull them off, though I've noticed it tends to be especially bad for guys that are either super skinny or are overweight. A lot of it depends on the type of face a person has, since it really opens up the face.

I'd also say to avoid Justin Bieber type cuts. A lot of women have them. Avoid cuts that are popular with butch lesbians - you'll get lumped in as a butch woman and it will lower your passing rate.

Some styles that might work: this and this. You could also try an androgynous cut, but that might lower your passing rate as well.

Oh, and as far as pictures, I'd say don't worry about bringing in a guy's hairstyle. I did it before I was out. It's not a big deal.
