My last one, however, I printed out three pictures of guys haircuts that I liked aspects of, went to my friend's salon and pointed out the attributes of each haircut that I liked and she kind of put them together.
You're lucky you had a friend with a salon to go to! I've taken pictures of the same hairstyle I wanted from different angles before, AND EVEN DREW PICTURES ON THE SIDE SO THEY COULD SEE THE CUT BETTER since the ref pics all had black hair...and they still gave me the most awful haircuts I've ever seen. :/ That was when I started cutting my hair on my own, and I can do a MUCH better job than any licensed hairdresser around here can, even in the back of my head where I can't see. My friends even come to me now when they want their hair cut.
And as someone who cuts others' hair, I think it's perfectly acceptable to take a men's haircut to the hairdresser and ask for it as a "female". If that's the cut you want, it shouldn't matter whether the model is male or female. It's the hair they're styling, not your entire face, and a good hairdresser will respect that.
Keep in mind, if a hairdresser tries to talk you out of a man's cut, or if they seem in a hurry to get you in and out of the chair, ask for someone else. They're obviously not confident enough to give you what you want. If you have a particular hairdresser (which is what I'm getting is the situation), tell her you just like the cut and want to try something new and brave.
