Andrea Sánchez's brutal murder, sadly, is hardly an isolated in case in Chile. Exactly one week before the Calama ruling, a 54-year-old transgender prostitute named Michelle Carrasco was beaten to death in the outskirts of Santiago. Less than two weeks earlier a second transgender person, Moira Donaire González, 30, was murdered in the coastal city of Viña del Mar.

Two other transgender killings were also reported last year. Overall, 11 such crimes have been reported since 2002, according to the Movement for Homosexual Integration and Freedom, Chile's leading sexual minorities' advocacy group, known by the Spanish acronym MOVILH.
