With changes to insurance coming in 2014, should I stick with anthem or switch to humana for srs? Does anyone have information about what insurance companies are going to do? I have been told that anthem will begin coverage for srs on some policies.

While i don't know  all of the details on it, i do know there are still active attempts to overturn obamacare, so i would advise against changing policies or insurance companies until they have been cleared up. It would really blow to end up without insurance because of technically having an existing condition. I was even turned down recently because of my bipolar.

Insurance plans are to be offered by then in four tiers designated from the lowest premium to highest premium as bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. The plans covered ranges from 60% to 90% of bills.  Exchanges are supposed to be up and running by Oct 1 of 2013 and fully functional by January 1 of 2014....  Do you already know what tier the SRS coverage is in as reguards to those two?   I'm not sure anyone really knows how things are gonna play out.. could be quite the mess or go smoothly.  I'd wait till you can see whats what in writing and odds are  SRS will probably be only offered in the top two tiers or platimum only.  Since a ton of lower end policies will be defunct  and no longer offered because they will not meet the minimum coverage requirements of the law I wouldn't expect to see it offered in the first two tiers.   Until this is rolled out doing anything right now is kinda a crapshoot.

January 1st .. no one can be turned down.   :)   and coverage goes into effect in 90 days or less..

The insurance I have through my company is Anthem. I was looking through my coverage plan a little while ago. My plan doesn't specifically state that it is covered. But under a section of surgeries that are covered. GRS is one of them and so is an Orchi. They have it listed with a set of requirements necessary to qualify. I have enrollment again at the ~end of the year. I will for sure post something about the coverage here. I will be meeting the a rep for a confidential meeting to find out all the details. I sure am hoping that it will be covered. But it won't matter if my work decides to be discriminatory in the coming months. I plan on going full time at the new year. So *fingers crossed*  ::)

While a pre-existing condition clause will no longer be able to be used, an exclusion of services can and will be used by insurance companies to control costs. I foresee less policies covering SRS or trans related care, not more. My mother has already been told that she can not get insurance because of diabetes, with no pre-existing clause, just an exclusion. Any policy can exclude almost any condition. There are a few things that are required coverage but not many. Her only recourse was state insurance with prohibitive premiums.

I currently have Anthem thru a company from which I took a buyout. It is the same as the retirees' policy so there is little opportunity to change tiers. I am currently employed by a state government agency which offers Humana. I will be able to switch companies at the next open enrollment. For 2013, surgeries for gender reassignment are excluded from both policies. That is why I am anxious about any changes for next year. I want to schedule surgery now. Due to the waiting period for most surgeons it will probably be next year. I was just hoping to have help from insurance. I would even consider changing jobs for the right insurance coverage.
