The issue here is not of feminism or lesbianism. The question is does our society have laws to cope with unprecedented situations, such as the one created by the case of Shumail Raj and Shahzina Tariq? Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif of the Lahore High Court (LHC) sentenced Shumail Raj and Shahzina Tariq to three years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 each. He said failure to pay the fine would add one month to the period of imprisonment. The couple was jailed for lying about Shumail's sex, who pretended to be a male. The couple, who happen to be cousins, was sentenced on charges of perjury. But no case was instituted under Section 377 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), which deals with unnatural offence.
