Any fighter game fans? If so what's your favorite fighting game?

For me I'd say Marvel vs. Capcom 3 or Street Fighter X Tekken

I enjoy fighting games, but oftentimes cannot afford them.  Right now I have UFC Undisputed 3 and Tekken Tag Tournament 2. I also like Street Fighter

Super Smash Brothers Melee

Awesome game.  What can I say?  Although, I must admit that I really want Soul Calibur III to be my favorite fighting game because I get to beat people up using KOS-MOS wielding a scythe.  But, the fact of the matter is that Smash Brothers is a superior series when it comes to pure entertainment.  I prefer simple and fast-paced brawlers over those with large movesets and complicated game mechanics.

I am! Admittedly, I'm not great at fighting games by any means, but I like them nevertheless. I have the problem of being too good to find challenge from my friends who don't play, but nowhere near good enough to beat my friends who do. Granted, they've always been better.

Anyway, I have a long history with fighting games. The first fighting game I ever played was Mortal Kombat on the SNES. Yeah... The first I ever actually got good at was Killer Instinct. For years, Soul Edge/Blade was my game of choice, though I lost interest in that series after Namco started resorting to gimmicks circa SoulCalibur II. During the life of the Dreamcast (amazing system for fighting games), I took a great interest in SNK's catalog. I actually prefer King of Fighters to Street Fighter as most characters have larger and more varied move-sets. I think KoF98 is probably best overall, though I also really like 2001. Last Blade 2 and Real Bout Special are other favorites of mine.

In recent years, I think Virtua Fighter 5, Super Street Fighter IV, and BlazBlue have been great, though BlazBlue has a near vertical learning curve for fighting newbies. Also, I love the 2011 Mortal Kombat. I didn't expect it to be nearly as good as it was.

I thinks MK was the first one I played too either that or Street Fighter on the SNES. I never played Killer Instinct but can't wait for the new one on Xbox One it's one of the reasons I preordered the Xbox over PS4

I used to be a street fighter addict lol. I got serious about playing it and actually won a sf2 championship edition tournament at the arcade where I lived. I had a friend at the time that was also really good at it, and we would both take turns just blocking  while the other player tried to hit crossups. I stopped playing it after ssf2 though.

I used to be into Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat 2 back in the day. I was un-touchable. People regularly threw controllers at me, or stormed off cursing. In arcades people started fights with me.

I backed off once artificial "combo mechanics" were introduced. At that point it seemed much more artificial, and about flashy effects. The organic feeling, the natural ebb and flow of combat seemed to take a back seat to memorizing button sequences.

I've started getting back into them again a bit though, with Street Fighter 4. I hadn't touched a Street Fighter game in ages, and dominated a room full of frequent players a couple weeks ago at a friend's house. I promptly purchased the game for my PC and my PS3 ;)

It really feels like a return to the good old days of fighting games. If you haven't tried it, I recommend it.

This is one of the reasons that I rarely play any fighting games other than the Soul Calibur or Super Smash Brothers series.  Both of them focus on individual attacks or small strings of attacks combined with simple and more complex fighting mechanics.  This is as opposed to a lot of fighting games which have very simple fighting mechanics but a huge list of long combos (Tekken comes to mind)

One of the reasons I stopped playing Tekken was because it seemed that the person with the most knowledge of the character movesets and the quickest reaction time always won the match.  There is very little actual strategy in those types of games because it is all about reading and reacting to pre-set combos.  Memorization affects the gameplay way too much.

Those two are great, my go to fighter team in Street Fighter x Tekken is Juri and Poison.
Lets see, other than those two I love the Mortal Kombat and Soul Calibur series, and Darkstalkers is definitely where it's at for me.

I think a big part of the problem is that as combo systems got longer and more advanced, there wasn't a corresponding increase in defensive mechanics to balance them. Something like mid-combo parries, or Skullgirls' system that looks for input loops, or even C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!!! It's not particularly fun when you lose half your life bar on one mistake, but can't do anything about it, because you can't do anything due to being juggled/stun lock. Plus, one-sided matches where the first person to start a long combo wins tend not to be as interesting as matches with some proper back and forth. I think even the threat of combo breakers could be enough to encourage more strategic use of combos. Make the long stuff risky.

How have I not seen this thread before today? ???

I LOVE FIGHTING GAMES! My favorites are pretty much any Mortal Kombat game and I really like Injustice: Gods Among Us too but no wonder since I'm a huge DC fan as well as a MK fan.  ;D

I remember playing the original MK in the arcade before it ever made it to consoles.

The first Killer Instinct did it right.  You could chain a wide variety of crazy combos (for it's time, anyway) but you did less damage per hit the longer the combo was.  It also had the famous C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER system.

I absolutely hate games where if you get hit once, you will get hit a total of 10 consecutive times and there is nothing you can do about it.  That's just dumb.  Actually, stun-lock in any game is dumb.

The last fighting game I was really into was Marvel vs Capcom 2 on the original Xbox, though I'd kill for another Powerstone game

If those are your complaints, then you should try playing Virtua Fighter. That game is all about strategy, but it can be difficult to get into due to it's steep learning curve. I'm always up for giving lessons though. ;D

It's been awhile since I've played it, but Virtua Fighter 5 is an exceptionally good game. I think it's a lot more polished than its predecessors, which were already solid. Aoi is my best character.

I was, at one time. Not so much now, though.

My favourite has always been the Soul Calibur series. Although I think that started to go downhill after number 3.

Isabella Valentine (Ivy) was always my character of choice. They kinda messed her up in the latest games, making her move list insanely complicated. I always thought her storyline with Cervantes was interesting, and her inner turmoil reflected a lot of my own.

That being said, during my childhood I was somewhat enamoured with Killer Instinct. And still, to this day, maintain it has the best soundtrack to any beat-em-up ever.

I love fighting games! But uhm, I'm not particularly good at any of them except for Smash Bros. Melee and Project M.
Main Zelda but I play Jigglypuff, Marth, and Luigi as well.

Too bad we can't play together.  I don't have many people to play with, as my friends have either moved out of town or they are always busy.  I rarely play any characters anymore.  I almost always play Falco and sometimes Captain Falcon, Ganondorf, or Marth.  Every now and then I'll play Mewtwo, Pikachu, Link, or some other character just for fun.  But my score will be horrid if I am not Ganondorf or Falco.  If I'm playing against other players and not just the computer, I'm best with Falco, Samus, and sometimes Mewtwo.  But, mostly Falco and Samus.

I don't really play the 'puff anymore.  I tend to stay away from floatie characters, which is why I stopped playing Samus and Mewtwo.  As I've gotten better at the game, I've found that the fastfallers have more advantages to the playstyle that I'm good with.  I should probably practice with Fox, but I'm lazy and I also don't play very often.  I usually stick with Falco when I want a high score because he's the man.
