What's your favorite makeup brand and why?

As I may have mentioned in earlier posts, I haven't dressed en femme in years. Now I thought I would start working with makeup (among a million other aspects of transition.) I was curious as to what brand(s) of makeup you use and why. What part of your makeup do you never go out of the house without? Lipstick? Mascara?

Barbara Ann, it just depends on what particular makeup.

For base and powder I like Clinique because they have two dozen shades, and they can make a perfect base/powder match, in summer or winter.

My eye color is always Loreal. Mainly because it is a little softer than most, and picks up on my brushes better. BTW never use anything but brushes for the best results. The sponge tip applicators that come with eye shadow is junk compared to fine brushes.

Mascarea varies, but usually Lancome, mainly because I can talk the counter girl out of a couple of the free short trial size that they give away with cosmetic packages. They are really nice and easy to use, especially for the lower lash. My cheek gets in the way of the long stem/handle.

Lipstick is Revlon Overtime Lipcolor which will usually last through a meal if I don't eat anything greasy. You can get longer staying lipcolor, but I can't afford $25-$30 a crack.

Eyeliner. The lower lid liner is CoverGirl and is the only CG product I care for. On the upper lid I use Maybelline Ultra Liner liquid. Don't try liquid liner on the lower lid though as there is not guide to keep a the brush steady, and you will never have a good straight line. On the top you have the upper lash to guide the brush (lower lashes are too fine and curl/bend the wrong way).

That's something I've wondered about.
Do people here usually wear foundation.

I never do, It makes my skin look worse no matter how light it is
because my skin normally has a healthy natural glow and
all the sun damage has disapeered in the last year.

In the last year, I've preferred working hard to get my skin looking
good with tretinoin (prescription medication shown to build collagen and reduce skin disorganisation that produce wrinkles, like renova, retin-a, etc), lactic-acid 12% (lac hydrin), micro-dermabration and 30% glicolic peels, hyaluronic acid as a moisterizer, aloes, cicaplast as skin barrier restorer (after rough treatments like microdemarbration, Karite butter and small doses of urea. To crown all of this, I used Anthelios 65 SPF UVA and UVB sun block (the best on the market, it has a long lasting ingredient called Mexoril, it doesn't degrade fast in the sun and the protection lasts longer).

My skin, helped by the collagen building and pore closing skills of estrogen and spiro and all those  things has gone from horrific to fantastic. By the end of the year, I hope to get fraxel on the little area with the few deep wrinkles (those you can't treat this way).

I'd recommend a top notch skin care to anybody. It makes such a fantastic different.

OK, now back to makeup:

Lipstick:

-  10 L'Oreal (tons), 3-4 of their limited edition line (cheetah is a fantastic color, I just dread the day I will run out because I haven't been able to find an identical one anywhere), 5-6 Revlon (tons including 4 long wearing colorstay ones), 1 Lancome (Fantastic but a bit expensive), 2 Lise Watier and a couple of cheap NYC I use when I mostly want something to protect my lips from dryness when I do winter activities like skating.

Lipgloss: Some L'Oreal and Some Revlon. Bronze, deep brownish reds, and spice colors usually. Some clear just to pump on normal lipticks.

Eyeshadow:

- Mostly Revlon and L'Oreal, Lise Watier (Lise Waiter ones are fantastic, high pigment content, it just sticks to your eyelid, and a very slight shimmer), a local store brand (when I'm trying out colors) and some Wet & Wild (when I want something that's different).

Eyeliner:

- Mostly stick ones from our local pharmacy chain, got some in ever color known to man that suits me (since I'm a neutral color, that's quite a lot).
- I've got some creamy high quality sticks by Lise Watier (Very nice).
-  Got glitering gold liquid liner for Lise Watier for night out
-  Got a liquid from Lise Watier that enables any powdered Eyeshadow to be transformed into a long lasting liquid liner.

Mascara:
- Revlon, one black with a white lash extender liquid on the other side.

Blush: 4 from Revlon, variation of dark plums for winter wear and peach for summer.  Also got two cream blushes from Revlon. From L'Oreal, Truematch Apricot blush (neutral 3-4) (very nice, my best one).

Bronzer: 2 cream one, one with a yellowish sheen, one a darker brown. A powder one I use on my cheekbone.

Foundation, powder: Sometimes, I use this to keep the powders on my eyes in place during the winter.

Foundation, liquid: Trumatch Neutral Level 3, I don't use it useally unless I've got a strange random redness for a few days (must use a conceiler too then). I also often use foundation on my eyelid during the winter when my skin's so dry that no powder eyeshadow wants to stick. During the summer, I don't need it since my eyelids are oily enough.

Finishing translucid, illuminating  power: Revlon Skinlights. Gives a very nice finish.

Eyebrow pencils: Black and deep brown, Revlon.

I hope that's all, though I've probably some other exotic stuff hanging around.

I'm a recent convert to Clinique. Love it. I've heard it's the healthiest brand for your skin, and it makes me look good enough to please even me (my own worst critic).

I am currently using Clinique foundation, concealer, and powder. The basic coating--where quality counts the most. For all the sorts of colors that go on top, I'm still shopping around for something more affordable. I went to the Clinique counter the other day for my first professional makeover. It looked so good, for the first time I was suddenly passing so well, I thought--even if I walked by me, I wouldn't clock me. It was worth splurging on.
Here's what I find about compromise--
don't do it if it hurts inside,
'cause either way you're screwed,
eventually you'll find
you may as well feel good;
you may as well have some pride

I like so many! It depends what I get.  Foundation/Powder- Chanel and Dior, because they stay on all day, leaves your skin looking fresh all day.
Blush/Bronzer- Chanel and Nars, because they have really nice colors and the pigment is great!
Eyeliner- Dior because it goes on smoothly and stays on
Lipgloss- Chanel, Dior, and M.A.C, beautiful colors!
Concealer- Make up forever! It works sooo good!! stays on all day, will not clog pores!

Sorry, Yvonne, is "Makeup forever" a brand?  I never heard of it!

>>Concealer- Make up forever! It works sooo good!! stays on all day, will not clog pores!

Is it a store brand or a mall brand?

Thanks in advance!

Very nearly all my cosmetics come from MAC.  It's definitely not the cheapest stuff out there, but I love MAC for the following reasons:

1.  All their stores are totally T-friendly, so shopping in person is not only easy but often a lot of fun.  Their staff is generally pretty knowledgeable.  (Hint - try to shop when the store is less crowded.  Not because they don't like trans customers, but because they can give much more personalized attention.)

2.  MAC cosmetics have their origin in theatrical/photographers makeup, which means that they tend not to smear, fade, etc. under sweat and heat.  As a consequence, you can actually use less makeup than you otherwise would.  For girls like me who very much need foundation but hate the "caked on look", their foundation and powder are especially terrific.

3.  The pigments are very saturated and very consistent.  Also, their co-ordinating colors actually co-ordinate.  (In other words, the NC20 color powder actually matches the NC20 color foundation.)

4.  At least for me, the makeup is relatively easy to remove and doesn't do too much damage to my skin.

If you're curious as to the results, go to my photo page - the link is below - and you can see for yourself.  Cheers!

MAC is indeed very popular for Trans and theatrical/photographers makeup, but I do doubt if it looks really natural, especially during day time... so I never consider of using it...

Clinique - Stay Sunny Makeup   It's liquid and light and I use it sparingly. it goes on easily.

Clinique Rich Pink Blush - Just a tad. Works well with Stay Sunny.

Revlon -  Coffee Bean (4 shades) eye shadow.   I love the earthy tones. I mix them up according to how i feel at the time.  Sometimes 2, sometimes 3 shades at a time.

Everything else  -  I just use whatever I have. I do favor dark lipstick, maybe a red once in a while. The lighter shades just don't show on me.

I love the Revlon Golden Affair sculpting blush for fancy occasions when you can use deep shades. The color is very rich and saturated, and just a teeny bit suffices.

My mom recently had me switch to MAC as it is what my aunt uses and several of my mom's friends do too.  The guy who does my hair is friends with one of the guys working at the MAC store by me, so we got a little more personalized attention when I went to check out the makeup.  I am not sure how "fake" it looks, but I have all of my makeup on in my current avatar, although you can't really see my face (I was playing with my 5 year old cousin when the pic was taken).

I would have to say that my favorite brands depend on the area to madeup.

For foundation...I use a combination of Almay and Pur Minerals.  Seems to be best combination for me.

For eye shadow...I use MaxFactor.  I love the color range available and the heavy pigment without having to MAC prices.

For eye liner...I use Ulta or Arbonne. They seem to be softer and easier to apply. I always use pencil, never liquid.

For Mascara...I use Cosmetique.  I seems to last the longest under any conditions.

For cheek color...when I use it I usually use Ulta or MaxFactor, basically because I got a sample for free.

For lips...Favorite lip gloss is Loreal, and all-time favorite lipstick is Cosmetique. It is totally weightless, and stays forever!

I always use MAC products. I started out using anything I happened to purchase, but was referred to a MAC store by a friend. The stores are all very friendly and they will go out of their way to help you with your make up. My first time I went with a gg friend and basically got a makeover at the counter. They also teach you how to do it yourself so you can always look put together. I highly recommend everyone try them out.
