FOX News Plays 'Dude Looks Like a Lady' Over Photograph of Chelsea Manning: VIDEO
By Andy Towle

http://www.towleroad.com/2013/08/foxmanning.html

FOX & Friends played Aerosmith's "Dude Looks Like a Lady" over a photograph of Chelsea Manning today, and took the time to caption the title of the song as well, for those listeners that didn't quite get it.

While FOX seems to have decided on the offensive approach to the Manning story a while back, the AP and NYT have finally figured out their approaches, Think Progress reports:

In a blog post announcing the decision on Monday, the AP said the new policy is in conformity with its style guidelines:

The use of the first name Chelsea and feminine pronouns in Manning's case is in conformity with the transgender guidance in the AP Stylebook. The guidance calls for using the pronoun preferred by the individuals who have acquired the physical characteristics of the opposite sex or present themselves in a way that does not correspond with their sex at birth.

I don't know what's more offensive: the song, the bigotry, or having to view fox news.  It's like a trifecta of awfulness.

i may not know american television, but there are several reasons why i no longer watch that rotten box and things like this make me miss it even less.

It's Fox News, what did you expect them to do?

It's barely "news".

We have that too here in germany, they call it "RTL" and its magazine equivalent "BILD". "BILD" should be banned. They sell us hate propaganda against greece and asperger's as actual news and make up most of their news.

Don't think for a second that the people on fox are dumb.  It may be incredibly biased and properly labelled as propaganda, but many of them are smart and know exactly what they are doing.  The station is ran by a former republican campaign guru, Roger Ailes, and he makes sure that the station portrays his conservative agenda. It's the right wing version of what Current used to be.  Media has gone down the toilet since the death of the fairness doctrine and has been solidified with the Telecommunications act of 1996.

So this was played in the "tease" for an upcoming segment, on Fox & Friends?  It is an opinion show, after all.

Not a lot to get wigged about.  I would like to hear how the discussion that followed went.

It doesn't matter if it was for a tease.  Let's say they showed pictures of police officers and played NWA's "F*** the Police".  The message they hope to illustrate is portrayed loud and clear.  Many would be outraged over such a situation.  The same thing when they are playing "Dude Looks Like a Lady" while showing a transwoman.  Yes it is an opinion show and they have the ability to do it, but we also have the ability to criticise it and voice our opinions against their editorial judgement.

You certainly have the right to express yourself, and not support FNC with your viewership.  That's how the market works.

I am more concerned with the content of discussion, then the tease.  Teases are meant to retain viewers after a station break.  They are often provocative.  Consequently, this is just a tempest in a teapot.

Ann Coulter isn't transgender.  The reason the clip is offensive is because it is calling a transwoman a man.  It is transphobic and nothing can change that.  As for Media Matters, it may be poor taste to use that song to put her down, but it is different.  Cis women don't have people denying their identity saying they are men with a "cut off penis"  It's the context of the joke; not simply the joke in itself.
Still, I think it's a weak point for Media Matters and don't approve of those methods. Besides there are ways to criticize Coulter without going to that level.   Just read one of her books and pick out one of the many inaccuracies.

Having said all that, I find it interesting that people need to choose examples from both sides.  I'm a left winger, but I don't need to defend those on my side.  Wrong is wrong.  Actions are more important than ideology or the person it comes from.  Case in point is Anthony Weiner.  There was a time when I respected him.  Now, after all the lies, I'm tired of him and feel he can't be trusted.  Sure I can try to justify his actions by pointing my finger at David Vitter and Mark Sanford, but that doesn't justify any of their acts.  It's a debate tactic that is irrelevant.

By the way, I say that with respect.  We may disagree a lot of the times, but I still respect you for your intellect and for your great contributions as a member.

Not even a good debate tactic.  It is the Tu quoque fallacy.  ;)

And I heard that Ann Coulter's birth name was "Arthur Coltrane."

I think that's just a vicious rumor because of her more "masculine" persona.   People use that as a way to discredit her which is silly in my book.  She says and writes plenty of ridiculous things that those sorts of attacks are unnecessary.  I don't know why she has been so successful because there are actual credible and intelligent conservatives that are more deserving of being part of the public debate.  However, this is coming from a "demonic" and "godless" lefty, lol.

I find that anybody with something unusual pictured is accompanied with a song as a pun or other thing often before a commercial with any media outlet from talk radio to the Today show.  This is no different.  'Dude Looks Like a Lady' should be a complement.  As with Ann Coulter, I find her malevolent.

I think Ann Coulter is a fool, but people that call her trans are morons. Even if I was a GG I wouldn't use that as an insult. She sticks her foot in her mouth enough that you don't even need to use that kind of insult in the first place.

Ann Coulter is brilliant though, she found a way get rich and famous doing nothing but sticking her foot in her mouth.

I thought Steven Tyler was singing Movin' Like a Lady for the longest time until I saw the video. He kind of looks like a lady himself, albeit an ugly one.
