Changing name and gender marker in UK - Can I do both at once?

I'm trying to change my legal name and legal gender. I'm a citizen of the UK (though I live abroad). It seems that changing one's name is pretty easy, but the gender marker requires letters from specifically certified doctors. I'm kind of outside of the health system so this is a headache (I get my hormones from a friendly doctor in Spain, but I don't even have health insurance here in Germany where I live).

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this or can direct me to some previous threads on the topic? What I specifically want to know right now is, if I can change my gender marker and my official name on my passport at the same time. Getting a new passport is costly and I'd rather not have to do it twice. I know I have to prove my change of name to the gender recognition panel in order to change my gender marker, but perhaps I could show them bank statements with my changed name and not my passport. What do you think?
