Our take: State should protect transgender students09/30/2013 01:25:37 PM EDT
Earlier this year, Issak Wolfe, a student at Red Lion Area High School, was denied the opportunity to run for prom king.
Issak was born Sierra Stambaugh, and because of that, the school district believed he should run for prom queen - despite the fact that Issak now identifies himself as male. The district allowed Issak to wear a black robe at graduation - traditionally worn by male students - but printed his diploma and announced him at graduation with his former name.
To some, the controversy illustrated the need to expand Pennsylvania's anti-discrimination law to include gender identity. To others, it was an isolated case, one that could be handled on the local level, even if it excused discrimination against a transgender student.
Now it appears that was not an isolated case.
