Joe.

Any tips on how to cut your own hair? I can't afford a haircut so I'm going to have to cut it myself eventually. Does anybody know an easy way to do it? Thanks

There's tons of videos on YouTube. Just pick something simple, and only do it if you can live with a buzz cut in the case that it doesn't come out right. :)

I was going to say that trimming your own with scissors is fraught with disaster. Giving yourself a buzzcut, on the other hand is easy, but it's not the hairstyle (think light bulb) for everyone.

I ordered a razor for my buzz cuts today! LOL The irony. It was like 19 bucks on amazon and it has all the guards. Buzz cuts work for me and I like em.

I have been cutting my hair for years.  Get yourself electric clippers (they're pretty affordable) with different sizes for the comb guides.  They generally allow you to cut your hair with little skill needed as the guides keep it all the same length.  You can get ones with tapered guides that let you do the sides easily, and the better you get with using it the more creative you can be in your styles.

I've been cutting my own hair for about 2 years now. I have short hair by the way.

1.) Get some clippers; you can get a decent set for $20, a good one for $30-40 (buy from amazon so you know there's good reviews).
2.) Watch some youtube videos on self haircuts.
3.) Google "male haircuts" for ideas if you're not sure what you want. Short sides and longer top gives a squared-off look and always works out well. (I usually fade to 1/4'' on the sides and a solid 1'' on the top.)

If you're only working with scissors (been there before) then  . . . . just be very careful LOL. You will inevitably get a patch or two unless you're just awesome. But use a comb for a guide if using scissors. For the line up you can just use a shaving razor.

Most of all, remember that it's hair and it will grow back. It's okay to mess up, everyone gets a bad hair-cut now and then :).

There are tools for it. There's someone on youtube that demonstrates one fo these. It's kind of a clippers with an attachment that makes it easier to cut straight with one hand. I think one of them is called the Freestyla. Look for someone called Perpetual Tomboy on youtube.

Ive been cutting my own hair since i was 16 and i'm 30 now.. so.. im getting pretty good at it ;D

i generally wear a pompadour, which is long on top and i conveniently buzz to 3mm on the sides, the challenge will be the back, i suggest investing in a hand held mirror so you can check your progress, little bits at a time, you dont want to look like something out of a horror film, i generally use the buzzer on the top instead of scissors, as suggested youtube is the best bet for you, its not hard, and its just hair so it will grow back, good luck and let us know how you go! but if you know what you want search directly for it "how to DIY pompadour / Faux hawk / afro idk :p "

i have naturally wavy hair, makes cutting it myself really easy. i just cut everything approximately the length that i want, and if it's not too short, my hair will hide any unevenness by curling slightly. i'm fairly good at cutting hair though... only problem is in the neck, i either need an extra mirror or a mom to get it right.

If you want it short buy a hair trimmer with options to change to diffrent sizes. I got one of those and there pretty easy to use.

there kinda expensive itself but not compared to the fact you can use them multiply times.

Nat Kat they aren't that expensive. I got one with over 900 reviews for 20 bucks on amazon and it almost has a perfect 5 star rating and it has all the guards you see in that picture. You just have to look on amazon.

Okay I correct myself. you can get them cheap if you want. For me it wasn't that cheap but it was worth it cause I have tried paying for a haircut and then trimmed my hair, where doing it myself was alot better.

I've cut my own hair on and off for most of my adult life, learning to cut it every way from 2" to elbow length. The trickiest part is setting up a pair of mirrors that allow you to easily see the back of your head. I've rigged various setups with hinges and mirror tiles mounted on Masonite, though I can't really give you a good way to do this. Basically, you need one big mirror, like a bathroom mirror, and a place to sit close to it, then figure out a way to support a smaller mirror in front of it to give you a hands-free view of the back of your head. It helps if you can pivot the small mirror or have two small mirrors positioned at different angles.

I've never cared for electric hair cutting gadgets, preferring scissors. Since I've never cut mine super short this works best. I've used short pieces of dowel or short pencils as measurement aides to maintain consistent length while cutting. When scissor cutting, you always want to cut on the outer side of your pinched fingers. And, yes, I have cut myself a few times. Self hair cutting is a skill that takes a good bit of practice.

The best thing I can suggest is to go to Wal-Mart and find any of their hair trimmers there. They do have a variety that can give you a good cut that won't cost you a fortune.
