When it comes to sex, drugs and political scandal, Oakland City Hall doesn't hold a candle to that wanton city across the Bay. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. Of course, as a columnist, I wouldn't mind a little more spice.

Maybe if one of our councilmembers announced he or she is transgender. Or at least bisexual. Or if one was seen taking cough syrup a full week after his/her cough had cleared up. Maybe that's why Oakland can't get any respect. We're just too tame.

What the non-Pulitzer prize winning commentator Payton fails to understand is that local politics reflects what's at stake. San Francisco is a vastly more important city. There's a lot more money at stake in even the most picayune decisions. On a per capita basis, there's far less crime, so they get a lot more upset at incidents.

Chalk it up to Oakland's perpetually failing redevelopment schemes and general apathy in city government about crime. They just don't care and it shows.

(P.S. Could someone buy Brenda Payton a copy of "Writing for Dummies"?)

As far as nuts are concerned we do have Nancy Nadel, who fell asleep one day in the 1960's and has never woken up.

We have Jean, "I guarantee 802 police officers," Quan lying to the public with a straight face and advocating for every tax increase that's come up since she's been in office.

And we have a sorry, make believe journalist at the Tribune who writes fluff stories like this.

Aint life grand in the Oakzone.
