WASHINGTON, October 25, 2013—Several reports this week stated that the new Texas voter ID law, set to go in effect on November 5, could disenfranchise as much as one third of female voters as well as a larger portion of transgender voters.

The law was previously struck down as discriminatory by a federal court in 2012 under the Voting Rights Act, but placed back on the books after the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated section 4 of the Act this summer.

Thanks Natasha, a new voter registration is something I didn't think about since my legal name change and gender marker. I'm in Arizona so I am not sure if any of this applies to me. I better get researching it. Thanks.

I do also wonder if out of state voters moving to Texas will also have problems. I am toying with the idea of moving there. I may have to cross them off the list though. hug. Joann

Voter ID laws are getting really dodgy as of late here in the Lone Star State and it's driving me crazy. Currently my main issue is one that can be resolved quickly, but for elections next year... who knows?

My lawyer is already trying to navigate my gender issues without disrupting my marriage's legal standing and apparently there are potential issues in resolving them... Depending on how things go, I could see difficulties in voting but more out of confusion rather than malice and that's  because I live in a county that tries to be progressive! It really comes down to whether my license says M or F...
