The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) has called on the Howard government to enact 'omnibus' legislation to simultaneously eliminate discrimination against same-sex couples in the 58 federal laws outlined in its report on same-sex entitlements.

However, HREOC President, John von Doussa, admitted that the costs of removing current discriminatory laws would not be cheap. "The government hasn't given us a ballpark figure, but it would definitely be millions," von Doussa told SX.
