I'm in a rather complex situation and I'm looking for advice. I am a divorced trans-man and my ex-husband pays $50 a week toward child support. I'm assuming that changing my name/gender is going to affect the situation with him, although I don't know how. He has no intention of taking the kids from me, so that's not my worry, but will the /state/ try to? Also, my ex has no problem with me transitioning. One thing he always was is open-minded, but he's concerned about what will happen as far as child support goes? I'm leery of telling too many government agencies about my transition for fear of them taking the kids, but I can only assume the child support people would need to know, right? At least as far as the name goes, since I'll have to change my name on the bank account the money is deposited into.

While I'm on the subject of name/gender marker changes, in what order should I change those things in my various records? The people I assume I need to change my name/gender with are the probate court, social security, driver's license, birth certificate, bank, Masshealth and child support. I'm guessing it would be easier on at least some of those to change both at the same time, too. Can anyone give me a step-by-step?

The state won't care as long as the other parent doesn't care. For 50 bucks a week I think you have bigger priorities. I don't know all the legal stuff. But just want to let you know iread your post and there are people here can give you actually usefull help.

I would have said what Tiff said too but you sound like you are in the US and I know little about things over there.

Good luck tho. xx

Hi Nicholas, welcome to Susan's Place! I'm a M->-bleeped-<-, a true Weymouthite. In a nutshell, you do the name change, then Social Security, then the RMV. Here's a complete guide to documentation changes put together by the Wiki Staff. https://www.susans.org/wiki/Category:Documentation_changes

You should contact an attorney since you said your situation was complex.

If you can't afford a lawyer, go to your state bars website and look for a link to their pro bono program.
