I can't get through because of 'a high volume of calls' ;)  Nah but seriously, is it usually that hard to get through to make a phone consultation?

I received amazing news a couple days ago; my family has decided to pay for my top surgery! They said to go ahead and contact him and get the process started. I'm so excited I haven't been sleeping very much the last couple nights. I just lay awake in bed thinking about it. My whole life I've hated this part of me, and soon it will be done and I can move on with my life.

Gonna try again tomorrow. I have high anxiety when using telephones, but I'm muscling through it. What sort of things do they ask you during the phone consult?

Also I'm looking at New Beginnings Resort again. Are they shut down or just moving? Has anyone stayed with them recently?

I'm looking to have surgery sometime in May 2014, if anyone else is booked for around that time, hit me up and let's chat! :D

SO EXCITED!!

Garramone told me that this time of year is always crazy because all of the college kids want to get their chests done over the winter break.  I have never had a hard time getting through.  I had my surgery on 10/10/13.  I had to speak with him about an issue and sent an email on Thanksgiving.  They wrote me back Monday and told me he would call me back that day after his surgeries, which he did.

To my knowledge, Garramone only does his phone consults on Wednesdays.  So, when you finally get through, you will be set up for next week, most likely.  You need to have your phone on you at all times as he does not set up a time to call you.  You can also fill out the form on his website to get a call back if you are tired of calling.  You will have to email him pictures of yourself before the phone consult.

When you talk to him he will have his pictures in front of him and tell you if he can do the surgery or not.  He will give you all the details, from there.  You can schedule the surgery with his staff after the call.  You must pay $500 to secure your spot.  I gave them my credit card over the phone.  You need to pay the rest of the bill 3 weeks prior to surgery.

I stayed at New Beginnings, but I was the last round of patients before they started having trouble.  aleon515 was scheduled to stay there after me, so you could ask him.  I would highly recommend staying with them, for both financial reasons and because they do all the "worrying" about getting you to appointments, the grocery store, etc, for you.  It is really a stress free way to go.
Top Surgery: 10/10/13 (Garramone)

Well *I* am not calling his office anymore. LOL  But yes, it is sort of normal to have this problem. I just picked a different day and time and haven't had a huge problem.

I'm free to answer about New Beginnings. But yes they were having difficulties. I don't know if I am at liberty to say why but suffice it say that they had to move, but there was nothing illegal that they did. They are moving in December some time. I have a friend there now and he is in the last group at the current place. I'd hate to pay their moving van! Anyway this guy has seen their new place. It's awesome and has bathrooms for each room and is a lot closer to Dr. G's office, which is nice.
I had a bit of a weird time as I was only one of two people that were there. But by the Sunday all of a sudden it was full and we went out to eat and stuff that I think is somewhat typical. I got to know a family from Ireland really well, the parents and son. It was more fun with more people there and what I perceived as the normal activities of the house.

I'd recommend it, but if you go by yourself, it is not really like having someone there. I was expecting someone is always there and it just isn't like that. I was taken care of after surgery, at least that was my experience. I spent about $75 for food, while I was there (and $25 or so for restaurants). They take you to the store and have tons of foods there. They also have breakfast for you.

Yes, New Beginnings isn't about taking care of you physically.  I would say it is more like a hotel with a kitchen and with staff who will drive you to the places you need to go (pharmacy, doc appts/surgery, and grocery store, at a minimum).  You can't beat all that for $139+ per night!  There is definitely some cash savings there (being able to cook, no need to rent a car, etc.).  It is especially good for those guys who would have to hire someone to bring them home from the surgery and stay with them for 24 hours, if they had no one with them.  I did very much appreciate their "tips" and knowledge when it came to the recovery process, as well.  You also knew what to expect on the day of surgery due to their knowledge.  But, yes they have "jobs", so they are not always present in the house.  I suspect that how much they are around is based on how busy they are with their other businesses.  I would guess that there was probably only about 15-20 hours max where one of the owners was not in the house during the 9 days/8 nights that I was there, but I don't know if that is usual or unusual.  But, again, even though they were home, they usually had their own work going on.  Don't expect them to "keep you company", you need to seek out the other people staying there if you want that.

You do have to pay for travel to and from the airport (it is about a 40 minute drive from where they are currently located, anyway).  They don't guarantee a ride to their place, though.  If they can't pick you up it costs you $10 more for a shuttle.  They will take you to the airport right after your post op appointment, for certain, though.

There was 3 guys who went through the surgery process the same week as I did and left either the day before or the same day I did.  There were 3 more guys (including CJ from this site), who came the day before I left.  Garramone does surgeries on Mondays and Thursdays (and sometimes Fridays), so that is why people come in waves.

The issues for the owners came to a head the day after I left.  I am so very glad to hear that they will continue to do this great service for the community.  I can't say enough about how great it is to stay there.  There was a nice balance of connecting with others or having your privacy.  The tone is set for people to respect each others space, but you can always (if there are other patients who are out of their bedrooms), be around people if you want.  I don't know how the new house is set up structurally, but the owners did encourage quiet so people could rest without noise both day and night.

To clarify, I didn't expect or want them to keep me company (or expect that), but they say that they help people who come by themselves. Just wanted people to know this is pretty limited. OTOH, I didn't need much except the day of surgery. I am pretty sure that it is typical to be pretty much up and around the day after surgery, but I am not sure. They did help me out, but my friend was not helped out the day after (I am thinking this may have been a mistake, he gave someone else the responsibility and she goofed with me as well with something. Not to say this is a horrible thing, I don't think too many people need all that much, but it something that it is good knowing going in. Fortunately for him, he was more up and around the day of surgery than I was. I was very out of it. That said, they did help me if I asked, for instance, in helping you with the drains (it took me a couple times to get the hang of it) and loosening up the bandages which they will do the second-third day out if you ask. (Worth asking!) No one seems to say anything even the slightest bit critical. I just wanted to give a realistic view more so, I guess.

When I was there they were very paranoid and so on. The fact that no one was there when I was there was not coincidence, they had cancelled most people's rooms. But by Sunday, I think they had figured out they couldn't legally be kicked out that quickly, at least how I interpreted it. It seemed more like what goes on typically. They had a full-house which was much more fun. We did what I imagine is more typical for groups there.

I probably saved money over a hotel (if I had had someone to to go with), as obviously they made it possible for me to go to Dr. G (which I am REALLY grateful (didn't mean to imply otherwise, just wanted people to know what it was like). $0 for cabs, $75 for food, etc etc. $139 was tax-free, which isn't really something you could have in a hotel. From what I saw my expenses were typical.

I think it is an amazing service to the community- and really happy they found what sounds like a great place.

Hey, Jay!  No, I certainly didn't think you were being critical!  I mentioned the part about them not keeping people company because I was surprised that they weren't more involved with people (or at least one of them wasn't), when they were at home.  I wanted to make sure the people who are looking in to New Beginnings knows this.  I am glad that you mentioned that people shouldn't expect too much "hands on", help as well, as I think that they web site implied more help than is given (unless requested).

I was being a little critical tbh. That said, I think that nobody is perfect and they have/do a great service to a real lot of trans guys and their families.

Yeah I was a little surprised at this too (they were less interactive-- I actually think they are a little shy), but didn't really care. I made friends with other people in the house which is more the idea anyway. I made the point that IF you are going by yourself to know that it is NOT really like how it is for someone who brings someone. You WILL be able to have your surgery, which is the whole point. After the surgery they brought me food and helped me with the drains and checked on me, so it was possible to go by yourself. I am a pretty independent person, so I was not really keen on having someone breathing down my neck after surgery anyway. :)

Got my phone consult booked for Wednesday! Very excited.
For New Beginnings all I absolutely need from them is to get me to and from my preop visit and surgery.  It saves me the stress of having to get all flustered trying to find the place and be there on time. They don't pick you up from the airport though?
Does anyone know when you pay? Upfront or when you arrive?
I like privacy. If I have wifi I'm set anyway.  ;)

I plan to book for May so I should have plenty of time.

I'm so excited.  It's just so. Aaaah. YES. I've waited so long and this is finally happening.

Exciting! I would write down any questions you have. He will ask  you and if you go uh um, he's going to think you really don't have any.

I just noticed NBR's webpage is back up!! I don't think the payment thing is set up again, but you might contact them. There is a webpage listed.
http://www.newbeginningsretreat.com/

I paid New Beginnings before, the whole danged thing. They MAY pick you up. They did me. There is an extra price which has gone up to $50 (may be less for the new place as it is closer). It is the only extra thing that you pay. They are very good about this and they are absolutely right on that. (Obviously you pay for meals and so on) They will tell you how to get there if they can't pick you up. Yes they have wifi. They are going to be in a new place. I couldn't always get it in my room, so I sat out in the sitting area and picked it up. I'm sure they will continue to have free wifi.

I wouldn't want to pay to move all their furniture!! But very psyched for them. Sounds like a very very nice place.

I only paid for one night upfront and then paid the rest when I got there.

I just read the information on the new website.  I noticed two things:

1) They don't mention picking up/dropping off from the airport like the did on the last site.
2) They say that you can get Wifi in the "common areas".  I was lucky that from my bedroom I could get Wifi.  I would have been pissed if I wasn't able to get it in my room (as it did not say that on the site they had up previously).

The host told me that they tried more than once to get the house completely rewired, but it still wasn't working (or something like that).

Anyway, it is kind of weird to think that the new place doesn't have Wifi in every room since that was his goal in the last place.  I would ask that question specifically because you will be spending a lot of time in bed!  If not in bed, just relaxing and I know I prefer privacy for that (hanging out in my bedroom).

The main thing though as you said, was the to and from appointments and surgeries...not having to stress about that....priceless.

Yeah just looked at the changes. I didn't get the wifi in my room 100% of the time, but I did sometimes. Maybe they only want to say that is for sure what you get.

I just noticed re: the transportation. Maybe because they will be closer to the airport? I don't know.

Matt, you need to contact New Beginnings, NOW!  You don't want to not have a space.  The expectation is that you stay 8 nights.  They want you to come one day before your pre op appointment so that you can get settled as the next day (pre-op) will be very busy (additionally, your pre-op will be most likely in the morning).  These guys know how things roll, so it is best to stick with their time schedules.

I was scheduled 6 weeks in advance with Garramone.  I then went on New Beginnings site and saw that I couldn't get a room until the following week.  I called Garramone the next day to change the surgery out for one week and the receptionist gave me a hard time.  Even though I called her less than 24 hours later to change the date, she was not pleased!  You get charged if you change your surgery, but I guess she figured it was a bit insane to charge me when it was only the next day.  I think the reason why she gave me a break is because I told her I was staying at New Beginnings

Anyway, the fact that Garramone is so strict about date changes is one thing that came into my head when you asked about him changing the date.  He doesn't want us too, so I doubt he would!

I am glad that you are staying there.  When I read your thread when you said you were going to Garramone I was going to ask if you were going to New Beginnings.  I think it is crazy to go anywhere else.  Even if a person wants to rent a car and have virtually nothing to do with their services, it is still cheaper to stay there and have a full kitchen.

P.S. I just remembered the guy that was staying there from England stayed 10 nights (or more?).  He said something about having a to wait a certain amount of time before flying that long distance after having surgery.  You should look into that.

Hi Brett, Thanks. I've been sorting out over the last few days. They were fully booked but Leland has managed to squeeze me in with a room change mid way and then I'll need to spend the last few days in a local hotel. I'm really happy with that and am grateful that I can stay there. :)

Hey there! My retreat days booked are : 5/11/14 - 5/20/14 (9 nights)

My Pre-op is the 12th, Op on 13th, and I forget the post-op but will figure it out later. Looks like we'll be seeing each other there?

Totally going to hijack your thread with a question for other guys...since you called in February and are booked for May. Is that generally how long the waiting list is during non-peak times? About 3-4 months? I'm trying to figure out if in the end I'd be better going with Garramone if my Dr. here has a long waiting list.

They may have had earlier dates, I wanted May as that fits a window I have and also means I'm just over 6 months on T, so wouldn't want to be much sooner than that even if I could have.

You can call their office and ask re dates, they're really helpful.
