I'd like to start saving for a hysto. Does anyone know how much they cost without insurance. Where would I go to get one. Like surgeons? Thanks!

A hysto costs around 10 to 15 thousand dollars, depending on who you go to.

However, I've read that's possible to get insurance to play. Here's one doctor's take on trying to get it covered by insurance, just in case it's useful:

A big factor is the type of hysterectomy. If you haven't read up on that, this page might be helpful.

I had my hysto covered by insurance. The surgeon that did it is a gynecologist also and coded it for pelvic inflamitory disease (PID) when listing the reason behind the surgery. And guess what? Testosterone is a little used (but still listed as) a treatment for extreme cases of PID so nothing to explain there. Now I do know that it is hard to get covered if your insurance (and ID docs) have you listed as Male. After all cis men do not usually have any need for a hysterectomy.

What amazed me about my surgeon is the fact I found him in Texas, I guess it goes to show me that there are small pockets of acceptance everywhere....and the money he gained probably helped too since it was robotic. Which I loved because there are no tell-tale scars and the recovery was faster.

If you do go ahead and save for surgery without using insurance (which may not be possible soon given the new healthcare stuff going on in the US, if you're not in the US just disregard this) remember to also save enough money for recovery time off of work and potential complications. They don't happen often but they do happen, sometimes serious like in the case of my surgery. You may be interested in checking out hysterectomy support sites for some of your info. Especially prices since they also vary by location and surgeon.

Here in South Australia, I was quoted $8000 with no insurance - but some of it was covered by Medicare.  Looks like in the US it can double that amount.

Yes.

Have been fighting insurance even though it was authorized.  I had two insurances at the time also.

That's really shocking.  I can understand guys in the US going to Garramone - but it's something to think about if travelling overseas for hystos or bottom surgeries is actually viable considering that I doubt even with airfare and accommodation you'd have to pay $35,000.

From those OBGYNs I have contacted, around 10-15k usd is about right, including one night hospital stay and everything.

In Ontario for a hysto not covered by OHIP (the government health care) so full costs I was quoted $1 000 for the surgeon, approximately the same for each the assistant and anaesthesiologist. I can't say for sure for hospital stay because that part is partially covered but I think for someone coming from outside who isn't under OHIP hospital stay is like 1000$ a night.

Got all the bills yesterday, just wanted to share the info:
Surgeon $4500
Hospital ~$9000 (including overnight stay)
Pathologist ~$300 (I was not told that a pathologist provided care for me and I have not seen a pathology report yet. I will try to figure that out)

Total ~$14000

The healthcare bluebook gives estimated fair price $11554

The full cost of mine would have been approx 20k if I didn't have insurance that covered it. That was for a laproscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy +oopherectomy. I think prices vary depending on how they do it.
