Apparently my next door neighbor has a friend who was just happily discussing being a transwoman outside my apartment. I half wanted to pop out and introduce myself, but couldn't figure out a non-awkward way to do that (it's late at night here in Texas and I was TOTALLY overhearing their conversation). I'm hoping I'll have other opportunities, but in the meantime I am highly...amused? Pleased? Comforted? Just a good moment I had to share with y'all: We're really everywhere

I don't know if you're still in the closet, but with other things coming out to a fellow was easier for me. Still have to find a transgender within my friends...

No I'm not in the closet, but I'm sort of new to this city, and all of my friends know I'm trans* but they're cisgendered and we don't really ever talk about it.  I have as yet to find any trans* people in the area, and then one just popped in next door to me. Good luck on finding a trans* friend, I imagine it would be nice to talk about the kinds of ideas discussed on this site in person.

I would introduce myself! It will be so much better to go through this with someone who understands. Maybe this person is established in the area and can introduce you to a new life and where/where not to go. I think it would make transition go much better for you to have a real life friend. :)

Yeah it would probably be awkward to have randomly joined the conversation. lol But if you walked next door and introduced yourself then say I couldn't help but hear the other day that's your trans. Which is something I find very interesting because I'm trans to! Then hopefully things kick off well enough.  ;D

or walk next door, introduce yourself, and let the trans thing come up on it's own down the line, or maybe drop a hint or two during your introduction (ie: "I'd love to have lunch with you then but I've got a laser hair removal session that day...."). Forcing the trans thing into the discussion might prove awkward.
