Hmm hopefully, well see how I do but I feel like I can relate to younger people pretty easily, probably due to my refusal to grow up despite growing older.

Yay Antonia! From what I've seen you'd make a good role model.

And yes, that picture is me when I was 4... yes I knew back then, even.

You were a darling child even back then!  :)

It's so nice when you finally get to turn on a flashlight to your life and begin crawling out of the sad cave to realize things aren't so overwhelming after all, or even if they are, that you can handle it, isn't it? Congrats on feeling better!

Thanks Spacerace I was being overwhelmed dealing with everything at once but once I separated my issues and dealt with them one at a time it was a lot easier, thanks for your kind words xx

Songs. I got really keyed up because I had to talk about some serious stuff, and in the process of trying to calm down I decided I'm tired of always being terrified of cps and I showed my kid some videos of good music that happens to contain some cuss words. She was a little startled and I tried to explain that some things that can't be quoted in most settings are still culturally important or healthy to experience. That was probably a little over her head, but still.

When she was not even old enough to talk I once got reported for being a "satanist," and the resulting investigation used an acid bath cd and a salvador dali print as evidence against my being fit to parent her. Years later I got in trouble after she told somebody she heard the word "butt" in a pixies song. For real. For a decade I've been hypercareful about every tiny scrap of media I expose her to, but now we're so thoroughly in the system and documented that I'm pretty sure most of the government is glad they don't have to deal with us more than they already do. Most of the reports now are about bruises she gets from holds at school, which fortunately leaves a paper trail and a lot of witnesses.

Nothing we listened to today was overly aggressive or sad or scary, so I think it's okay. It was Dead Milkmen, Radiohead, Negativland, Queen, Elvis Costello, Motorhead, Madness, and a bunch of AV Club covers on youtube. I can't even think of what parts might not have been completely appropriate, but just not being scared is a big deal to me. I think most of the times I got reported or investigated it was by people who just didn't like who I am or who my kid is, and I let myself get strangled by the details they jumped on when they couldn't find anything actually wrong.

Even if music was somehow damaging my child, listening to it makes me a more complete person and a better parent. I also think a person's entertainment tastes are worth passing on to offspring. I'm really happy to be starting to do that even if I'm not always as brave about it as I was today.

My cat has made me happy today. He is up here purring. He cares when nobody else does. The fact that I soon get to meet the family I never knew also has made me happy today.

87 pages in this thread and I need to post as well.... I just made my first therapy appointments, yeah appointments plural, with a therapist and psychiatrist. I say this because it is part interview process, and comfort with the right individual. I know this is a journey and I want to feel secure I have the right help along the way. This is a big deal!

I have had to suppress this for so long and just to begin talking with someone about my hopes, dreams, desires, fears... I have a lot of  baggage, as you can imagine.

Nevertheless, this is a good day.

It's my birthday, I took the day off, and I have CAKE!!!

I was told that little children clock you faster than anyone else and are brutally honest.

So, I showed my kids this picture, and asked, "who is that?"

They paused, one of my daughters (4 years old) looked back and forth at me, and said, "that's a girl!"

Totally made my day... They have no idea how right they are!

My fiction writing professor told me I "have a mastery of language that is incredibly rare for someone at an undergrad level". I mean, I kind of think that's more a reflection on the level of academics at my university (kind of a party school) but it was still pretty rad to hear.
