Figured I should try this again, and maybe not remove it a few days later in a depressive mood spiral.

So here are my latest finished pieces.

^This was for the DeviantART Tomb Raider contest.

Wow!  You are so very talented.  I used to think I could draw, but then I met some artists in college who convinced me that I should probably just stick to music.  I can draw people and you'd at least recognize them, but that's about it.  It was funny having a conversation one day with an artist friend who admitted he was quite envious of my guitar/bass playing abilities.  We had quite the laugh.

That's kinda awful.  No one should have convinced you to stick to music.  Art is almost never a natural born talent, it's one that is learned through work and practice.  If it had been me, I would have encouraged you to keep practicing and recognize your milestones, when you reach that point you've been working towards, celebrate them and find a new milestone to work towards.

It's not quite like music where being tone deaf can be a life long hindrance, that can be overcome to a great degree, but will always be a speed bump.

No, actually it was me that convinced myself to step away from the drawing pad.  Nobody ever told me I sucked at it, I just realized one day that my free time was probably better spent doing music.  I do appreciate good art though and love to visit art museums.  I like a very wide range of styles.  Some of my faves are Kandinsky, Hokusai, Dali, Matisse, Monet and Haring.  Just like music, I'm all over the place!

Ah, that's very different.  Yeah, stick with what draws you in and you want to spend the time practicing and working on.

You are exceptionally talented, hon.

I adore the one with the shark. It's so evocative. And the self portrait is very beautiful. Although she looks a little sad. Like... hmm... hard to explain. Her eyes, or behind them.

Sorry, don't mind me. Just being weird.

Thanks!   And don't apologize.

I get that a lot with my art when it comes to eyes.  People always read emotions in them and rarely see them as being blank.

To me that's a huge compliment.  Means I'm doing something right, even if it does tend to be a bit unintentional.

Nice work! I love your humans! I find them one of the hardest things to draw, actually. Love the self-portrait too!

Thank you!

Humans are very much the hardest thing to draw.  A little tidbit from the movie Aliens, James Cameron sent the actors in the alien suits to special training so they wouldn't move like humans.  We are so adept at reading anything human that there are specialized classes for actors to learn to remove all human-like movement from their performance, not only that can we tell when something is human-like in movement, but we can also automatically tell when something is off about movement that's supposed to be human.

The same thing with vision. There are sections of our brain that are devoted solely to recognizing faces.  We are hardwired to recognize human characteristics and very adept at catching all any mistakes.  We aren't hardwired to do this for anything else.  So, in one way humans aren't exactly harder, we just can get away with a lot more with everything else that isn't human.

The title I originally used on dA was "ew"  but wasn't particularly happy with that.  I think you kinda just nailed it with "Really?"  I'm editing my dA title now.

Title suggestions for this one?
