APPLETON — Gypsy Vered Meltzer expects some people to be uneasy about his election as an openly transgender member of the Appleton city council. But he's determined to not let it become a distraction.

"I can see some push back, but I hope they'll get over it," Meltzer, 31, told Post-Crescent Media on Wednesday. "I hope things don't go that route. I don't want to lose focus on the issues and increasing communications between the city and its residents."

Meltzer identifies as a man and said his dreadlocks, 50-plus tattoos and gender identity are worth celebrating. But he says he's ready to serve his constituents.

"I'm focused on the issues rather than myself and look forward to the day when this isn't as interesting of a topic.

Huh. That's nearby.

I wonder if I could take a trip to offer my congratulations?
Also I wonder if I could get elected as a transgender Republican?
Don't lose who you are along the path to who you want to be.

To be honest, my major opposition to republicans at least where I live is because they are so radically against LGBT issues. So ... an LGBT republican who didn't come across as screaming crazy ... they'd honestly have a good chance of getting my vote, and maybe a lot of other people who would normally vote democratic as well. Go for it.
