The past 2 injections I've hit a vein or something and had blood come up. The first couple were perfect. Today I thought it would be ok until I took the needle out.

In your experiences where is the best place to inject the thigh?

My doc showed me where not to inject.  The bleeding always stops but I'd rather not see blood at all.

I get blood about 60% of the time. As long as it's not a lot, you're fine. You should be pulling back on the plunger of the syringe to make sure you don't draw blood, but our bodies have more than just big veins and arteries. There are little capillaries under your skin everywhere. If you break the skin, chances are you will bleed.

I've had heavy bleeding a handful of times, a tiny drop or so most of the time, and very rarely absolutely nothing at all.

In the situations were I've bled a lot, or a fair amount I've had my T come out too. This also happens sometimes with small amounts of blood. I've found that if I have an additional alcohol prep pad, or gauze pad nearby helps. Immediately after pulling out the needle, apply pressure to the spot.

This site is pretty good for anatomy. You can see the various muscles and ligaments that are in the thighs, where nerves are located, and where major blood vessels are. You can look at different levels to figure out what's an ideal spot to inject.

That's helpful Nygeel. Thanks.  How can you tell of T came out too?      I applied pressure today and last time for a couple minutes just to be safe. I must have hit a vein today. Blood came out with the needle. Shoot.  do you inject more T if it came out?

Honestly, when I've noticed the T come out, it's that an actual clear yellow-ish liquid came out. Then the blood would come out. There was one occasion where a fair amount of both came out one right after the other. It was kind of funny to me because the oil didn't really mix with the blood and looked kind of like a liquid timer.

I never inject more T after it comes out. If I'm feeling bored and notice a lot coming out I might put my needle up to the "puddle" of T and suck it into the syringe. It doesn't really serve a purpose other than making me go "nooooo the precious!"

LOL!  Totally!

Good to know. Last time T came out first---this time I saw the blood sort of gush out so quickly put pressure on it. I've bookmarked that site for next time.

Sometimes there is blood because you hit a capillary or something when you are injecting. As long as you don't see blood when you pull the plunger up while you have the needle all the way in, it is fine.

A good way to judge the right place to inject is by imagining your thigh split into thirds horizontally. Put your thumb (same side as the leg you are injecting into) at the point on your leg denoting one third (closest to your hip bone). Your thumb should be pointing straight towards your knee. Spread your fingers, anywhere in between your thumb and forefinger is a good spot to inject.

I would guess about 1/4 of the time I get some blood. Most times a drop or so, rarely a good squirt. Though I do try to not stick myself where I see veins or capillaries, you don't really know what is under the surface. You nick or go right through something and blood squirts out after the needle is removed.

What is key is aspritating, or pulling back a bit on the plunger to make sure the needle is not in a vein. If blood appears in the syringe, that is bad. Also try not to push or pull as you inject since there is no way of knowing what changed down there. Much easier said then done when you are doing it to yourself

What bothers me far worse then blood is seeing the elixir of life bubbling out as I try to put on a band-aid. I paid good money for that stuff! I want it all!

Thanks Joanne-I know what you mean about seeing the elixir of life bubbling out!  Aspirating is something I hadn't been doing but did it with my most recent injection which went fine thankfully.  This was helpful so thank you.

Are you sure it's a vein? If it's a vein the blood isn't the typical red color we more associate with blood, it's a far deeper, blacker color. If you've ever watched blood being drawn, that's the color of blood from the vein. If it's more red it may just be some surface capillaries.  Either way, unless you're noticing it on aspiration, you're okay  :).

Yeah, I usually see some blood too. I very quickly learned to apply pressure for a minute or so after, to avoid all those lovely bruises.
