I've lost a good bit of hair over the last 4-5 years. I still have a good deal, but my hairline is definitely receded a bit and I have some thinning in the crown area. I've used minoxidil in the past and just got a prescription for fin. I'm hoping to see a therapist very soon. If I decide that I'm a reasonable candidate to transition and I do, I'm hoping hrt will halt any further loss, after which I plan on having my hairline and scalp "redone."
1) I believe hormones, so long as you aren't too far into the balding process, may halt and even thicken up hairs that have thinned. DHT is what causes MPB, it's a male sex hormone and byproduct of testosterone; so lowering or eradicating you T levels should have an impact. If that happens, your hair loss halts and/or thickens up, then you can have a hair transplant to lower and feminize your hairline and also thicken it across the whole scalp. For this you would need to still have a decent bit of hair to donate.
2) Be careful with Rogaine/Minoxidil... it can screw up your face, literally. I used minoxidil for about 6 months last year on every part of my scalp; hairline, crown, sides, etc... I got drastic results, even on my hairline, but out of nowhere my skin seemed to be saggy and less springy. It could be because I was weighing in at about 135-140lbs at 6'0" last summer; I also lost most of the fat in my face, which I feel awful about - but there are a lot of claims that support this and studies have shown that Minoxidil can imped collagen production in the skin.
My skin seems to be recovering, I'd say it definitely has, but I still feel there's a bit more "healing" left. I do have to say that I was using about 2 times, maybe a bit more, the required amount since I was using it on every part of my scalp, even areas that weren't thinning. Overdosing on anything could have side effects.
3)If your going to use minoxidil, I'd also get on finnesteride. Minoxidil will thicken up hairs that have thinned, it won't grow new hair, so if you have a slick area then it probably won't do anything. Finnesteride will work in conjunction to this, like hrt, it will repress the DHT (not T) and halt further loss for a number of years (not in all cases, but for about 80%).
