TheQuestion

I've lost a good bit of hair over the last 4-5 years.  I still have a good deal, but my hairline is definitely receded a bit and I have some thinning in the crown area.  I've used minoxidil in the past and just got a prescription for fin.  I'm hoping to see a therapist very soon.  If I decide that I'm a reasonable candidate to transition and I do, I'm hoping hrt will halt any further loss, after which I plan on having my hairline and scalp "redone."

1) I believe hormones, so long as you aren't too far into the balding process, may halt and even thicken up hairs that have thinned.  DHT is what causes MPB, it's a male sex hormone and byproduct of testosterone; so lowering or eradicating you T levels should have an impact.  If that happens, your hair loss halts and/or thickens up, then you can have a hair transplant to lower and feminize your hairline and also thicken it across the whole scalp.  For this you would need to still have a decent bit of hair to donate.

2) Be careful with Rogaine/Minoxidil... it can screw up your face, literally.  I used minoxidil for about 6 months last year on every part of my scalp; hairline, crown, sides, etc...  I got drastic results, even on my hairline, but out of nowhere my skin seemed to be saggy and less springy.  It could be because I was weighing in at about 135-140lbs at 6'0" last summer; I also lost most of the fat in my face, which I feel awful about - but there are a lot of claims that support this and studies have shown that Minoxidil can imped collagen production in the skin.

My skin seems to be recovering, I'd say it definitely has, but I still feel there's a bit more "healing" left.  I do have to say that I was using about 2 times, maybe a bit more, the required amount since I was using it on every part of my scalp, even areas that weren't thinning.  Overdosing on anything could have side effects.

3)If your going to use minoxidil, I'd also get on finnesteride.  Minoxidil will thicken up hairs that have thinned, it won't grow new hair, so if you have a slick area then it probably won't do anything.  Finnesteride will work in conjunction to this, like hrt, it will repress the DHT (not T) and halt further loss for a number of years (not in all cases, but for about 80%).

Several Studies have shown Dutasteride to be very effective at reducing DHT as well, so there is at least one alternative to Finasteride. Dutasteride is also known as Avodart, and Finasteride as Propecia and Proscar. My hairline isn't bad, but I still take Dutasteride, to try and even out the hairline a bit.

I have been on finasteride for 13 months and HRT for 10 months. My T is <20 to 24 ng/dl. I am on the highest dose oral estradiol and as such there is SHbG which binds free T so how much free t I have is very low and the finasteride is inhibiting the enzyme that converts T to DHT by 60%. (dutasteride is 80% and the combined is even higher).

I have had about  50% hair recovery.

I just started a 0.5 dermal roller and topical liquid vitamin C on 4-15-2014.

I am seeking out another PRP provider as the last 2 appointments he could not perform due to the nurse being out and the 1st appointment he did not have me on the schedule. :(

Hair grows in cycles and only 10% are in the growth phase at a time. I think the growth cycle is 3 months but I could be wrong.

Time is key and restoring pathways of blood in the dermis, so I have read.

I may purchase a laser comb too.

Hair is my #1 issue too.

The above is from what I have read so take it with a grain of salt.

I've been a member of the No Hair Club for Men since about 14 when it first started receeding. I think HRT has helped with hair  growth in my ears, that is about it.
