When is it ok to start wearing *underwired* bras??

Hii just wondering about whether it's ok to wear bras with an underwire or not.

I am aware that M&S don't recommend it as it can damage growing buds/restrict growth. I've asked a few doctors, with some saying this is the case and it's a bad idea, but with others that it's absolutely fine...

Does anyone have any experience on this??

Thanks :)

I didn't begin to wear an under-wire bra until fairly recently (21 mos HRT).  Both because I didn't really need to, and because I was not full time and so kept everything a bit squished up with sports bras.  I've never heard that they could retard breast development, but if you have concerns, run it by your doctor.  My doc smiles at my question quite a bit, but always answers them.

I avoid them like the plague.. If you don't have to, don't..

Huh. I never heard anything like this about them. I started wearing underwires around 6 months in, and if it's restricted any growth, I haven't noticed it!

Personally, I think this might be a myth; if it were true, there'd be tons of medical professionals lining up to tell cis girls not to buy underwire bras during puberty, instead of the "teen department" having dozens of them. Maybe people got it mixed up with the fact that lactating mothers shouldn't wear *tight* bras, as it can restrict the flow of milk and that sometimes leads to mastitis...

Never, those things hurt, try playtex 18 hour bras, so nice, comfortable.

I never heard that before. I've been wearing underwire bras throughout my transition and let's just say I'm not lacking in the breast department. Personally I love underwire bras I know a lot of women don't like them but I have no problems with them.

Heather : I love them, too. I get such terrific shaping and projection with underwire. My wife, though, has never found one that isn't incredibly painful. It must be something about the shape of some people that makes underwire really [un]comfortable.

I love underwire bra's.. Majority of my bras are underwire.. I love how they shape and riaise my breasts.

I started wearing underwire bra when I hit a cup.. Never restricted my growth..

Yes!! And I love them too! I bought loads before, since I've been full time a while now, but it's only since I've been on hrt that my breast development is actually happening. And obviously I don't want to damage anything!

I did buy a few without a wire, but they make them seem far too small and it looks a bit odd on me with such small breasts right now :S I hope they'll grow over time :)

I agree. I'm ashamed of the way I look in anything else.

I'm only an A cup so far and I have both plus two sports bras. I find the sports bras comfortable as long as they're not too tight but I'm just as comfortable in my underwires. However I like the ones I have without the underwiring just as well too. I guess because my breasts are still growing I've kind of a mixed opinion on the subject. As far as bra's with underwires being harmful, I'll have to ask my Endo at my next appointment for I haven't heard anything yet saying they were. :icon_flower:

I forget which bra site I looked at, but it claimed 80% of the bras sold are underwire.  I used to avoid them like the plague, but now that I have a wee bit in the way of  breasts (due to Androgel of all things...) there is one underwire style I really like.  So some like them, others not.  My late wife would not have any underwire bras.

To each their own!

I love my underwire bras for the support and shape they give,

But I really love my cute lacy Bralettes for how comfy they are! They dont add much "shape" but they do keep the "pokie" effect down vs braless ;)

Of course I'll let y'all know what I find out. I won't see him again til June (I just saw him a week ago after bloodwork) but I can post the question on his web portal. That way I'll have an answer for you soon.

@Diana

underwire is not recommend for those who just had BAS recently ... but if you are still have breasts from HRT only , then i would say yes, go for it , buy bra with padding , help your breasts in better shape

for me, i rarely wear bra .. but when i go out , i like to wear push-up bra like this

and this is me, a bit drunk after party lol
