Sometimes, I think I'm the last person who actually reads folklore and myths.
I keep running into people who claim to like Norse beliefs, but who insist that "jotuns"=bad and gods=good, that Loki isn't a god because he's a jötunn, and all sorts of weird ideas they wouldn't have if they actually bothered to learn the mythology. If they did, they would realize that this isn't Christianity and there is no good/bad dualism. They would realize that pretty much all the Æsir are at least part and sometimes all jötunn. But no, they have no interest in actually learning about something they claim to like.
I never seem to stop running into people who have no idea what faeries are. The worst are those who think faeries are all goodness, light, and sparkles. I have no idea where people get that idea, but it makes me feel sick. Or there are the ones who think faeries are little things with wings. The Victorian era was to faeries what Twilight is to vampires. There are also the people who read a brief amount of folklore, but then stop and latch onto a few simplistic ideas they picked up which wouldn't be so bad if they didn't then claim to like and know a lot about faeries. Clearly, they don't like faeries because they gave up learning about them or didn't bother in the first place.
