Or has anyone lived in a van?

I'm at a stuckpoint in my transition. I need to find different housing (I live with housemates who aren't keen on all of this). I've put ads out on craigslist for various places and got some strange as well as reportable (discriminatory) response.

I'd like to find an apartment where I can live by myself for $600.  Is that possible?

I just want to continue transitioning without worrying about losing my housing. I got the ok from the doctor to up my dose which I'm psyched about but housing has become an issue.

It all depends on where you want to live, as in what city, country or state. You can rent a room here for $200/ month which includes utilities and internet with on site laundry.

I'm pretty open to city and states at this point.  I'm older (over 45 but under 55).

St. Louis is a really cheap place to live if you are looking for a city.  $600 for rent wouldn't be a problem here at all

You haven't said where you are now (country/state), so it's tough to recommend a place unless we know generally where you are..  NE?  SE?  Central US, desert SW?  Big Sky country (MT/ND/SD)?  Starbucks area (NW).. Land that shakes a lot.. Cali?  Just picking a place on the map, without a means to get there isnt easy.

areas in and around Phoenix, for example, has some furnished studios and 1br apts btwn $520-$609, plus elec (btwn $40-$60/mo).  If you don't mind a lil warmth for a few months.. you never have to shovel snow, slip on the ice, and monsoon season is only 6 to 10 weeks.  Besides, a few of the nations BEST TG docs are here.

There's always Vegas.. and "what happens in Vegas.." well.. you know the rest..  6 short hour drive.. Southern California.. think I'd avoid Texas.. I wouldn't think its that trans friendly.  :-X   The central states cost of living is fairly low.. but acceptance.. hmmm..  :-\     Wisconsin.. Milwaukee has some inexpensive areas, but is the opposite end of the thermometer from AZ   >:-)   Portland is supposed to be one of the best trans-friendly cities in the US, but if you don't like rain..

If transportation is a problem (iffy car) Phoenix has decent bus/light rail (in town only) service but would take a while to get from one side of the Valley (surface) Of the Sun to the other.

You should be able to look up Apartment Finders (city) and see what's out there.  Google search
http://www.bing.com/search?q=apartment+finders&qs=AS&pq=apartment+finders&sc=8-17&sp=1&FORM=IE11SR&src=IE-SearchBox   and see what comes up.

Good luck!

I lived in a tractor trailer for about a year before, getting hotel rooms when I felt the need to actually have a real bed. It wasn't great, but I did save a bunch of money and took care of a few things. If I can't get my finances together for transition soon I might have to do that again.
15 years on Susans, where has all the time gone?

This is helpful Paula thanks.  I currently live in CA.  Portland would be ideal......except for the rain.  :)

I have iffy transportation right now.  It's not all that fun having a chronic illness. I wonder if I would have gotten it if I'd transitioned earlier but I try not to look back. I'm grateful I'm doing it now. Just wish I had more funds.

I hear ya. I might have to camp or something so I can save money in order to move.  My car's engine is burning oil so I'm trying to retire it and so I can get a truck or van to live in----I know where I'd like to live. I just need to get the money together to get there.

I hope Medicare will pay for surgery soon. I'd love to have top surgery.

I hope you're able to get your finances together so you don't have to live in the tractor trailer again.   :)
