the problem I have is that when I cough my male voice takes charge . I'll be sitting in a coffee house enjoying life and all of a sudden I'll have a coughing fit or a few cough episode and I sound quite male . I can control my voice all right , but when I cough it's terrible .

Not unheard of at all Stephanie. Mine goes male when I get excited and talk to fast. Just one of those things we deal with.  :)

keeping a bottle of water around would be a good idea

That would not help my situation at all, but maybe if Animal Control darted me or something! ;D

Hi Stephanie,

Not unusual as all your muscle control has just gone out the window.
Two techniques that may help, apart from the water as suggested.

1. Control your breathing during the coughing spasm as much as you can. That will hopefully reduce the 'rasping' effect on your vocal chords.

2. Use a word to reset your pitch. Like practice one word (gosh) at your feminine pitch. After coughing or any other event you're likely to lose voice, use this word to re pitch your voice.

Hope this helps

My speech therapist played me a bunch of coughs and sneezes and asked me to gender them. I got maybe 20% right - she then pointed out there is no real difference.

I was hoping that was a possibility

^ me too. My problem, when I sneeze, its always hard ones, kind of like the big bad wolf, huff and puff and blow your house down. Whew. Uh-oh, gotta sneeze again. Blows nose...elephant trumpeting. Crap, there goes all my lipstick I was wearing. I have been trying though to be more gentle on the expelling of coughs and sneezes, still blowing my nose, its enough to wake the neighbors.

My friends use me as a duck or goose call. My honker really honks. Unfortunately, the cure is another surgery that I can't afford.

One trick I've found to feminize my sneeze or cough is to put a high noise (feminine  "ehm" sound) at the end of it. It works quite well since people are more like to remember the end part of a noise.

That's what I've been trying to do, so long as I'm prepared enough for it so I can mentally check myself and get a softening sound blended into or at the end of my sneezes.
