I was told tonight in a group meeting that somebody my age should be a "role model" in the transgender community, and dress accordingly.

But I like heels and short skirts.

wear whatever you want, you are your own person

role models come in all forms, and those truest to themselves are the better ones :)

I think you look great ! maybe they are just jealous to bad, wear what you like. I am the same height as you in heels which I wear all the time, but normally just wear jeans and a blouse when out and try to blend in.At home its always skirts because they are way more comfortable except when the cats decide my lap is a good place to sleep!  Patty   BTW I am 64

Welcome to the club,I'm 6'1 and a half without shoes and 56.You look great an you wear what you like,I get told I'm not a "real" transexual because I rarely wear make up, don't colour my hair, wear pants and flat shoes, listen to punk and metal,go to the punk rock festival, like classic bikes and muscle cars etc.
Regular readers probably know my reply to these people(clue the first word starts with F,the 2nd with Y!)

With the ready availability of unsolicited advice why pay for a therapist?  Yes there are all kinds of know it alls out there and they even know what's best for a transgender adult in her 60s.  I also wear what I want and hope you continue to suit yourself literally.

I recall one of our members talking about reclaiming some of her lost girlhood and if we sometimes appear as awkward 13 year olds it might just be that we missed our puberty the first time around and have a learning curve to play with.

Enjoy yourself April, you do look great and more importantly, IMHO, you look happy.

Well, maybe you are a role model. Wear what you like and have confidence to stand your ground when people dig on it in a bad way.

Just as long as your wearing panties... You Are wearing panties right? LOL Jk

Be yourself and love yourself. That's what's important.

Get a new group to go with your outfit!!   Your picture shows a person who can wear what you have on in it.  I am 6 years older than you are, and still have some skirts that almost aren't there that I do wear out.  I cannot wear heels higher than a couple inches due to medical problems, but I sure envy girls who can.  I do have nice legs too, and show them off as I can.  I embarrass the heck out of my daughters, because I have a better figure than they do, and I still have a beer belly left over.  Have fun, at your age you deserve it.  I consider myself to be too old to be a role model, or any kind of model for that matter.
I refuse to have a war of wits with a half armed opponent!!

Wiser now about Post Op reality!!

Hey there! Personally, I don't think there is any way someone should dress for anything. Do what you want! As someone else said the best role model is someone who is true and can stay true to themselves, age or whatever the best thing to do is just be you and maybe that'll rub off onto other people. ^_^

I certainly appreciate the value of blending in, but I don't believe that is who I am (at least for the foreseeable future). When I started thinking seriously about my gender issues, I thought that April would just be a more feminine version of my male life. But going through transition has allowed me to re-evaluate everything, and as I have gone through that process I have come to see how really contrived my entire life has been. It has also been the very definition of blending in - of looking like a typical male as much as possible. As I now shed myself of my male facade, I am realizing that my inner female is a very different creature with radically different priorities. I am going through puberty for the 2nd time in my life, and I am intent on making this time a lot more fun.  I want to bask a little in the sexuality I have worked so hard to win. One further thought on this: there are indeed CIS women my age who don't blend in. My sister is one of them. I am utterly stunned how much I look like a taller version of her, fashion choices and all. This has done tremendous things for self esteem. I feel like the rightful heir of a legacy that belongs only to the females of my family.

Hi April, I just want you to know that I'm at the very, very beginning of my transition and I "do" consider you a role model. Your being your authentic self is truly an inspiration so thank you. :)

Hi April,

I am too early in my transition.  Thank you for your post, you are a role modal for me.  I am 50 years old and 6'1'' I am very self conscience of my height.

I'm 60yrs old and 6'1" without heels.  I love heels and short skirts   They may not be exactly appropriate for the fashion police, but I missed those years when I was young enough to wear this type of clothing and I intend to have fun with it!  Yes, I do enjoy dressing more traditionally for "my age", but hell life is too short to not have a little fun.
Always running away from myself...

I very much appreciate all the kind comments and support. But I have thought about it a little, and maybe the woman in my support group is right. Maybe I should dress more conservatively, as if I am a "role model". So I went out and bought a new dress, and I absolutely guarantee you that I will be wearing it to our next group meeting.  >:-) >:-) >:-)
