Is it possible to file name changes in a different county than you live in? It takes an hour each way to get to the courthouse of the county I technically live in (right on the edge of the county unfortunately) which really sucks because I don't have a car so I would have to get somebody else to take me and I know it's going to take probably 2 or 3 trips. I need to file the petition, file the court order with the county clerk once the judge approves it, and then I have to file proof of publication in a newspaper. However, there is a courthouse that's only about 20 minutes away each way from where I live that would make things so much easier. I know my mother has filed legal documents in the court that is closer to where I live, but I don't know if that applies for name change as well. All the websites I read (including government) all say something along the lines of "file the petition with the Supreme Court" so it's not very specific.B Any info would be great.

Everything I know says it must be filed in the county one is a resident of but on the other hand we're not talking about a case that would demand a certain jurisdiction. I would recommend asking the court clerk of the closer location if you can file the petition there as long as you disclose to the court that travel makes going to the "proper" venue unfeasible.

I'll try what you suggested. I still have a little under a year before I can even get the money together to change my name but I just want to make it as easy as possible. If I have to, I guess I'll just find a way to get up to the courthouse in my county. I was thinking last night that maybe I can file the approved order at the same time as I present proof of publication to cut down on a trip. Anyway, thanks for the reply.
